Compliments of SCI's "In the Crosshairs":
Tanzania Hunting Situation

Last Friday, SCI heard that trophy fees and concession fees in Tanzania had been raised significantly. After doing some fact-finding, SCI found that this was apparently true, by as much as 500% in some cases. Today, SCI sent a letter to the Tanzanian Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism asking him to investigate these increases and to consider changes. We will keep you informed of the situation in the coming days. As always, please check with your outfitter before any upcoming trips as outfitters may have no choice but to raise fees to stay in business.

I'm hoping they will rescind the new law, at least until next year like RSA did on the circle jerk laws concerning game regs. Those in power seem to play "monkey see, monkey do" and if one country goes over the top, what will follow? I know you two have planned this for a long time and I want to see you come home with a C-lou Buffalo. Let's hope the pressure works. A lot of company's may lose their lively hood. Good hunting, David

What did your safari company have to say about the issue? I'm going July 29 and have sent emails to my outfit and waiting on replys...I won't be shocked if I don't hear anything this week,as they probably won't reply until they have some news one way or the other.

With that said I see no real reason to scream the sky is falling...just yet
My booking agent says I'm paid in full an he's the man I did my business with. If the outfit must eat the increase so be it. When copper prices go up every week sometimes twice a week I'm expected to eat the increase an I bid jobs 6 months to a year out.

ALP,

As you surmised your safari operator really knows nothing concrete and I'm sure he will get with you ASAP when he knows the final decision. At this time we are hoping nothing can be done this year as the proper time frame was not adhered to before the increase. BUT this is Africa!!!

I'm quite sure that a large percentage of deposits made to PH's or agents have been spent on preparations of camps, fees to gov't, salaries for workers, food and other supplies, transportation, etc. Many contracts state that deposits aren't returnable after a certain date in consideration of this (and no real chance of re-booking so late).

If a hunter chooses to cancel because of the upped rates, I wonder where the money will come from for a refund, even though the changes aren't the hunter's fault or the PH's. I'm sure the companies want to be fair, but wheres the blood in the turnip.

If this do-do becomes effective, I'm sure lots of companies have already spent several hundreds of thousands of dollars "getting" ready. Who's going to take that hit?

Judge what if you're holding a contract signed by the operator that states trophy fees paid in full for 2 buffalo and ALL extra Gov't fees?
I'm not a legal eagle but to me that reads they eat it...am I incorrect?

In this kind of situation, everyone's screwed if the new prices go into effect any date this season . The Safari companies stand to lose customers if they pass along the price increases and their shirts if they don't.

I genuinely feel for everyone involved now, and who had dreams of hunting in Tanzania. Everyone loses. ... sigh ...

Sure hope all works out for those booked in Tanzania. Seems like increasingly each country has its own set of issues. I guess it all comes down to . . . it is Africa. Given Tanzania's reaction last year to the outrage over the suspension of lion hunting I would optimistic that this gets turned around. Seems like these things too often involve reaching the right government official with the right proposal. thumbdown

It all falls back to money. Who wants it, who needs it but in the end who gets it. There is a trail that is easy to follow, and currently there's no concern who gets crushed in the stampede. Wait till the smoke clears. There's a 50/50 chance that they will suspend the increase, at least for this season. Good hunting, David

I hope you are kidding us.

You don't really think that the outfitter is going to eat increases of this size, do you? Would you?

I think I'd be:
a. in serious discussions with the outfitter and or booking agent and,
b. working on a "Plan B" since the airfare is paid for and your deposit is spent already and not refundable.

As I stated in a previous thread, my buddy just got back on Sunday and left after 12 days of a 28 day hunt. The operator has NO option because the govt would not issue gun permits for new hunters until his concession fee has been paid. Simple math, he has to come up with $200,000 BEFORE he can conduct another hunt. As it was explained to me by someone who has just returned, he sees this as a disaster for the operators unless they have very, very deep pockets. As stated in a previous thread, the operators have used deposits for operating expenses. The whole situation looks very grave from what I have heard the last couple of days from someone who has physically been there when it all went down.

Dear Guests ...

I guess by now it is starting to sink in that this is AFRICA.

From my understanding of recent events in Southern Africa, it seems to me that THEY (the so called authorities) can and do change the rules on us more often than you and I change our underpants/boxers

I know that (things work unilaterally) in Africa, we personally have experienced first hand in Zambia where the actual P. Hunter licence and operating fees sometimes seem to be set without consultation by the Wildlife Dept and we only tend to find out when we go to renew the licences

In SUMMARY then, talking about the Tanzania situation do any of you guys take out (Special) Trip cancellation insurance that might cover these type of events, or what is the status with (trip cancellation insurance) or do most of our AR guests just risk their deposit money and not take out any type of insurance cover !!

Cheers, Peter

Gentlemen,

The Minister has called a meeting with TAHOA today in Dodoma (The Capital where parliament is in session). After not showing up in the previous 3 meetings called by TAHOA, the Minister has now taken the first step and called the meeting. More will be known after this.

I remain optimistic that this season will continue as before. Next season? A different story but at least we will have 9 months to negotiate....

Yesterday we were successful im making application for a hunting permit and gun license for a hunt starting early next week.

No additional block fees paid, and the hunt was to be under the old trophy fees.

The bad news of hunters being kicked out of camp seem to be very isolated instances, and possibly overexagerations.

All the 21-day hunters I know of are still in camp enjoying the 18th day of their hunt.

I hope the Meeting in Dodoma goes well.

The Director has stated that ALL GOv fee increases (such as this one) have a 21 day notice period attached to them BY LAW. The new increases were communicated on the 13th of July so 21st day is the 2nd of Aug. Until that date, the Director stated, all fees remain the same and permits will continue being issued. After the 2nd, well its anyones guess unless something comes out of this meeting today and or an Injunction attempt by TAHOA is successful.

Sure hope you're right! I'm not walking on a $12K deposit and don't want to arrange a hunt in another country at this late date. But I hope to get more than a couple of days hunting for what I paid and am NOT paying $12K to shoot a leopard!
