Big game hunting is a new and unknown chapter for me, so I want to ask a question to you that have experience with this type of hunting.

It is buffalo that tops my list.

What country and what area can you find the best trophies?
Except Tanzania, it is beyond my limit.

If on a restricted budget, Mozambique and Zimbabwe have been my choice many times now.

The best buffalo trophy is a post breeding age 'dagga boy'. Such a bull will be at least 12 yrs old or older. He will have a completely solid boss, blunt worn down horn tips, ragged and tatty ears and a battle scarred body and face. He will usually not make the record books but he will be a truly magnificent trophy. Old bulls like this do not get to live this long by being either stupid or dumb. It is for this reason why they are such a challenge and good fun to hunt. The mid Zambezi Valley in Zimbabwe is a good place to start. Also check out the Caprivi strip in Namibia. Lots of good old bulls there. Contact me directly at doctari505@gmail.com and I'll give you some suggestions. If you are a new buffalo hunter I also suggest you get hold of a copy of Africa's Most Dangerous from Safari Press. The recently published revised edition of Perfect Shot also contains a very detailed buffalo chapter which will prepare you well for such adventures. With buffalo especially, please remember it is the 'hunt', and all that goes with it which should be more important than the 'inches'.

As Doctari says, you absolutely must get his books, 'The Perfect Shot' (that will help with your plains game and buffalo) and his book 'Africa's Most Dangerous' which is 100% buffalo hunting instruction. Doctari also has two great pocket-sized books to take to Africa with you, one is a version of 'The Perfect Shot' and the other is about buffalo trophy judgment.

Also get both of Craig Boddington's dvds on buffalo hunting. Buzz Charlton has great dvds too.

These will be a great foundation for your buffalo hunt, and Safari Press has them.

As for the countries, as the other guys have said, Mozambique and Zimbabwe are probably the least expensive, with Namibia and Zambia next.

My two cents: don't get caught up in inches at the expense of total spread. A solid 38 is much better than a soft 45.

I shot one buff just under 40 that has a boss with NO space between it. I have another one slightly bigger, but that buff looks very cool as a skull mount.

sth,

Now that the Save Valley Conservancy in Zimbabwe at least in part is back on line you might want to consider it for your buffalo hunt. The buffalo hunting plus the hunting for most of Zimbabwe's indigenous game is excellent there.

Hard to beat the Zambezi Valley for a great balance in terms of value and experience in hunting for a good mature buffalo. Some of the hunts being offered in the last week in the Save look interesting too; however, for me all the back and forth in the Save over recent months over permits might make me a little gun shy.

Your best reference would be the hunt reports. Someone like CMS seems to be the best bet.

However as a first timer I would want to be on a river bank and listen to the grunt of a Lion for the full experience.

I fully agree in. With the best trophy I think not inches, but rather a powerful and solid boss.

Lucky for you, you don't have the Lion bug.

The Buffalo bug can be placated (never cured) with many options. Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, Tanzania, even South Africa and Namibia, in select places.

AAZ put it well, leave the tape at home. Now start with thinking of an area. Luangwa River? Lake Kariba? Mozambique in the Delta or Mozambique in the bush by the mighty Zambezi? Selous Reserve?

So many options, so many Buffalo ... so little time, and, in my case, so little money to try to kill them all. Smiler

Maasailand, Tanzania and various areas in the Southeast of Zimbabwe are 1 and 1A, in my opinion.

Is TZ generally expensive, yes. However, a hunt in Maasailand originates in Arusha, does not require a charter, and ten days gets you two buffalo on license with the chance to shoot a real monster and some of the unique EA species. All of this for +/- 30k, which is not cheap, but is cheaper on the average than two separate ten day hunts for one buffalo each.

In the Southeast of Zim, you have big buffalo in the Save and bigger buffalo farther south coming out of Gonarzou Park and Kruger Park. Some of the hunts in Zim can be very price attractive if you can go late and on short notice. I've had double buff hunts for 12.5k, all in with a charter, and one coming up in October for not much more money than that.

There is a PH in South Africa who does Greater Kruger hunts (in other words properties unfenced on the Kruger National Park side) who can offer hunts for old bulls only, since that is the landowner's requirement for access. Prices are VERY competitive. Contact Jan Dumon at mwshumba@mweb.co.za

He can also obviously offer hunts on other properties for younger bulls.

I hunted with Thaba Moyo Safaris ( on Face book ) - PH Fanie Steyn at Kruger Park boundary outside the Palaborwa. Same thing, free range coming out of Kruger and big old Dugga boys. Plus great plains game as well plus some great elephants.

I think you need to add about 10K to that Masailand number.

I'm sure there are more expensive options and/or the advertised price is higher, but I booked ten days and two buffalo in Feb 2014 for $22.9k (2x1) plus TFs with a top operator. Unfortunately, we cancelled the trip since the extended season was cancelled and we did not want to travel in the holidays and did not want to hunt before the rains started.

Airfare, TFs, and tips, would have pushed past 30, but I reckon I would have been closer to 30 than 40.
