OLN is starting a new show titled: Dangerous Game.

The first episode features Cape Buffalo. Have no idea how good or bad it will be, but figured I should let everyone know. The first episode is April, 7 10:00 PM followed by April 8 at 6:00 PM. Check OLN in local markets. It is only a thirty minute episode. FYI

Anybody catch it? I thought it was pretty good. That story of the woman getting gored was quite riveting. Smiler

Was reasonably well done. The Atcheson's story was indeed riveting!

The Gerald McRaney World of Beretta segments on Africa have been excellent as well. The Tanzania segment repeats later tonight.

I very much enjoyed the show. The Atcheson's put it all into perspective. I did not care for the attitude of the PH in the Gerald McRaney show. He seemed to be pissed off when the client did not get a shot off. Even so, very well worth watching.

Thanks for the heads up, show was well done. Great to see the PH using that .500 Jefferey double. Nikki is one brave lady, had the pleasure of talking to her in Reno.

Yes, I saw the program and emailed them immediately to express my thanks for starting this series. I would encourage everyone who saw it to do the same...maybe it will lead to bigger and better things! The show from last night airs again tonight at 6pm EDT and several more times during the next couple of weeks.

Over all I liked it, but being extremely picky here... I guess I would have liked for them to give a bit of background info concerning Keith & Nikki, setting up the "drama" a bit more by filling in the fact that they are quite experienced and so forth... the scenario about this being dangerous game even to quite experienced people.

I enjoyed the show. I am ready to hunt buffalo again. I do have a question. The hunter said his double was a 500 Jefferey. Did they mean 500 Nitro? Are these the same? I thought the Jefferey is a rimless round for bolt action rifles?

Two young PH's in Tanzania. One is the designated hunter, with a Westley Richards boxlock (he said) in .500 NE 3", I understood, I thought, and observed from the repeated close ups of him loading his break-open.

He missed the first shot at the melon swinging on the rope at about 25 yards? Then he hit it with the followup, during "sighting in."

The buddy PH backing him up used a ".416" bolt action that looked bulbous enough to be a Rigby with 4 down.

The hunter shot the buff 4 times and his buddy got in one shot between the first two from the double.

Another example of poor shooting. Wink

Sumbuddy needs to take notes when it replays tonight to verify the details.

RIP-
I watched the show and like you, noted some things that I thought weren't correct. The one PH had a 500 Jeffrey "built" double rifle. The casings looked to be plain old 500-3" NE rounds to me. The narrator said it propeled a 500gr bullet at 2500fps, which must be the ballistics for a 500 Jeffrey, not a 500-3" like the ammo appeared to be. With 500J's rebated rim I would never believe they made a double rifle in that chambering! The other PH had some sort of bolt rifle in 416, equipped with a s/s barrel.
The first two shots appeared to me to impact a bit high, especially when they walked up on the downed buffalo and there were two frothy holes high behind the shoulder...I'd call them high lung shots.

I also thought the Baretta show was interesting on his buffalo hunt. Any idea of the gun used by Tony on that hunt? It was a LH rifle but looked like a Dakota. Could this be possible on a show sponsored by Baretta. Reason I as is that I am not aware of a big bore LH rifle made by Baretta or Sako in current production?? As a fellow LH shooter I take notice of these details!

I used to LIVE for the Beretta show, but they've re-run it to Hell and back, now, and I haven't messed with it. I don't think they're familiar with the concept of "a new season."

I'll see if I can catch the DG show. At least I won't have seen IT 45,000 times already.

John S,
Funny how I ignored the BS verbiage and believed my eyes. I will watch it again and try to pick up on the Jeffery and 2500 fps stuff.

I do agree that the first two shots were likely too-high lungers. That "magic" spot that passes below the spine and then theycan run all day and tomorrow?

Yep, bad shootin'.

The other show by Beretta with the PH acting disgusted when the wind changed, the buffalo ran off, and no shot chance was afforded, was just the PH hamming it up for the camera, he was some actor! Deserves his own series. "Schultz of the Bushveld."

The client was shooting wood and blue, and the PH had synthetic and stainless, as they hunted on in the Tanzania rain. Jolly good show.

Didn't like it much. Too sloppy and overly melodramatic (that okay, Will, or is it redundant?). Razzer

The details of these things are important and, for me, what makes them interesting, but some people (meaning lazy producers) don't appreciate that.

Then again, I used to get pissed-off when watching cowboys in 1870-80s era TV horse-operas using 1892 Winchesters.

Doesn't everyone sight-in on a swinging melon at 25 yards before going after cape buffalo? Everybody's an actor once the camera starts rolling.

It's amazing to me how critical we can be over a frickin' TV show! Gimme me a break.

It wasn't a documentary and it wasn't a training film. For the most part, it was for people who will never hunt Africa or anyplace else unless they can do it from their easy chair.

I would bet if we videotaped our own hunts and then played them for a knowledgeable audience they would be glad to point out every inaccuracy and error they saw as well.

Yeah, maybe they should be more upfront and accurate with their hunting sequences but afterall, it just entertainment. Lighten up a little! Pat yourself on the back and take a chill-pill. homer

I thought the DG show was pretty good last night, like the second show until the turkey started to gobble.

Yep, but I liked the nice red beret with the gold buffalo head pin on one of the fellows. They probably carry their single bullets in their shirt pockets like Barney Fife.

I watched it again.
it was a "Jeffery's boxlock" (not WR, my bad) in .500 caliber, with a nice doll's head third fastener. .500 NE 3" no doubt.

Then the moron narrator/studio-voice-over said it was a .500 Jeffery's firing a 500 grain bullet at 2500 fps for 8000 foot pounds. nut

I am glad I didn't pay attention the first time around. They should have had Hunter Jim write the copy.

And in the Beretta show, that was "Ernst Sholtz of the Bushveld," with the stainless and synthetic accessorized rifle and a Crooked Horn bino harness. thumb The client's left hand wood and blue rifle did seem to be wearing Dakota style sights on the barrel. Probably a .375 H&H or such, anyway smaller than a .500 NE, and it killed quicker than the .500 NE did, and no PH backup required.

Certainly didn't seem to be much difference in buffalo response between the smaller bolt action versus the .500 NE double.

Maybe it has something to do with shot placement. roflmao
