Jan Oelofse used to have a photo of himself with 'The Duke' in his brochure.
A fellow once told me that Oelofse was 'The Duke's' stand-in on the game capture sequences in 'Hatari'; I don't know if that's true or not (I didn't see Jan's name in the credits).

Yes he did and with an outfitter named Jans Olefse or something like that. I am a packrat and keep every magazine and hunting catalog. Somewhere I have a safari catalog from Jans that has a photo of the Duke and him listed as one of his past clients. I am pretty sure of the name of the safari operator but would not bet a huge sum. I'm not sure if John Wayne ever hunted with anyone in Africa other than Jan Oelofse, but if he didn't, it's likely he figured that he couldn't improve upon a good thing.
I hunted with Oelofse's outfit in 2001. At Jan's main compound there is a very nice museum, complete with excellent portrait-size photos of John Wayne and Jan, plus Jan with some of the other cast members of 'Hatari', including Red Buttons, etc.
John Wayne was a class act, and so is Jan Oelofse. I'm not suprised that the Duke and Jan were friends.
The Duke liked Weatherbys and Model 70s. He is pictured in one of the old Weatherby Guides with Roy and his brand new Custom 300 and in the movie Hatari! he used Model 70 Africans. Hell even in his choice of rifles the Duke was perfect! jorge
