LionHunterThe shadows and the grainy b&w film make it appear to be a male, but stop action seems to indicate it is in fact a female. In any event, a great job of trying to stop a charge.

Well Milo, he might have come across the lion while he was crossing open ground and the Lion charged.
Secondly, once you have seen the Lion, are you going to move away and potentially take your eyes off it.
Thirdly, i dare you to out run the Lion in trying to get to somewhere else.
On another note - I can see where maybe getting down on one knee might give you a better target / a steadier target (in that it is coming straight at you so less gun movement following a moving animal) ???

Greg BrownleePretty crazy, although the dead lion looked like it had more mane than the charging lion (whether it's a female or not). Also, the dead cat looked to be in a more wooded area than the one that was charging, although the hunter could have been standing on the fringe of the trees and you just couldn't see it from the videos view.
Cool video!

Tom In TennesseeUmmm...perhaps if standing , one has a better chance of sticking the barrel of one's empty double down the throat of the charger and choking it to death.....?

Quite a few cat charge videos around, the most spectacular and successful being the one with the lion stopped stone dead in the squatting shooters lap who received a little slobber on the leg. The classic Pondoro Taylor recommendation for taking charging cats.
Most others I've seen have resulted in the hunter or PH being got to by the cat and hurt or extremely lucky to have not got hurt or got someone else hurt, and almost without exception when standing and attempting to hit an incoming animal.
Personally if anyone hasn't the guts to crouch down and get the best angle on a charging cat to be sure of a killing shot, then they should not be hunting them, they are most definitely putting their PH and others on the scene at risk of serious injury.
As for standing so you can run, so the Olympic gold medallist sprinter are we?

Agreed. If you are on steady feet and your sight picture is good then it would be unwise to change anything under a charge scenario
If on the other hand you are predicting a charge from a cat then kneeling is a good option

Exactly my point. Take a knee. He had time to fire plenty of shots so he had time to get into a better position to where he probably would need only one. Standard procedure, not rocket science.

Actually I hope the PHs will chime in on this one, but it's been my observation that poor offhand shooters get only worse under pressure. It takes a decent offhand shot with good nerves to succeed in that situation, though it never hurts to get lucky lol ...

JohnDLDropping to one knee can and does work, but only if the charge is over an open area and not from close quarters.
Twenty years ago I was hunting in Kizigo with TGT (PH Johnny Yakas). I'd already shot a lion and we were following a buffalo herd when we accidentally jumped 3 lions who'd just killed a buffalo (one male, two females). When they saw us, the male kept on feeding but the two females started walking to us in a crouch. We started slowly backpedaling. Johnny had a 416 Rigby and I had a 500 DR (Marcel Thys).
As I had prepared for hunting lion on that trip I had practiced dropping to a knee. The terrain was open and the lionesses were about 60 yards away. I was fully prepared to drop to a knee but the lionesses eventually stopped and we kept going. (From time to time I've wondered how that would have gone down if they came.)
Lions are incredibly fast and it would be easy to shoot too high in a charge. Dropping to a knee minimizes this, but it is only applicable in certain circumstances.

500N I think your last paragraph is the answer to what Milo was saying!
All the old lion hunters have always recommended dropping to one knee when charged by a lion in the open! This makes the target much easier to hit every time you fire the rifle! While standing the angle and lead are constantly changing and makes the target harder to hit! Once on a knee there is no angle or lead to deal with if you are the target like the guy in the film in this thread, and all shots are into center of mass!
There is another film of a Johan Calitz group going to finish a wounded lion, and in that film Johan and two others get on their knees anticipating a charge. In that film Johan, and one of the others in the party are having to pass shoot the lion who has zeroed in of another PH it looks like the pass shooter are missing, but the PH on his knees that is the lion's target waits till the lion is very close, and pounds him from about 10 feet, killing the lion instantly while the lions momentum makes the shooter have to fall to one side to avoid being hit by the dead lion!
Maybe someone here has a link to that video! I hope so, because it gives a perfect example of the "ON THE KNEES" shooting of a charging lion!
Hope this works! This is the Johan Calitz film I was talking about!

The man who killed the lion in the Johan Calitz film would have had no trouble killing the lion, and in the old film that started this thread the hunter whether using a bolt or double he would have been better off going to his knees and wait for the lion to get close! In fact shooting from his knees he would have been better armed with a double, because he could fire the first shot at a much closer range, like 15 yards, and if that didn't stop him the second shot could have been fired in the lions face off the end of the rifle!
The profecionals are not dummies, and you notice in the Calitz film they all got on their knees for the charge!

Enough time to reload at 15 yards? With extractors?
