We are having a blast! Little bit of cat and mouse with this ram, and trying to figure him out, but we managed to outsmart him. Our hunter made a great shot on this beautiful specimen.

We get asked many times what is our favorite animal to hunt. The Bushbuck could be one that challenges us the most, but it sure is the one that is the most rewarding.
They are without a doubt the most temperamental animals out there. On beautiful days they will go missing, and be out in the worst conditions. He does what he wants.

Not sure that I follow. Where do you see hill country? The Lechwe feed out of the marsh lands and riverine.

This Caracal took us to some deep country. We had received a call from one of the nearby sheep farmers that one of his Merino Sheep ewes had been caught. Staff members noticed something in the grass and upon inspection, found the dead ewe, with the Caracal crouching behind and taking off as they approached. He phoned us to bring the hounds and upon dropping them next to the ewe, they immediately started working the scent.

Once the cat was treed and we approached, the cat got nervous and jumped. heading deeper down the valley. With the hounds so close on its tail, it wasn't long and they had it treed again. This time, we wasted no time and finished the job.

Hunting them this way over hounds is effective and accurate. Having three packs working the area, and being surrounded by stock farmers, ensures that we can offer excellent odds at getting our hunters on to these highly sought after animals.

Ever thought about taking a Caracal over hounds?

When Africa offers you a blessing, you better be ready to accept it. This is a stellar Waterbuck coming in at 32". A Waterbuck was never on our hunter's list, but when an animal in this class walks out, it was never in question.

What animals were there that wasn't on your list, that you now regret not taking when you had the opportunity?

Ivory tips is not something that is common on Bushbuck. This old ram was heavy all the way up with the some ivory to show. Typical Cape Bushbuck with his dark, chocolate coat.

Another magnificent Cape Kudu bull that broke the 50" mark. Since 2019, we started focusing heavily on age. Now, 6 years later, we can physically see the fruits of our labor from our decisions we made back then. So many more animals that we hunt during current times, on their last teeth.

How is this for a unicorn? This was an ancient Common Duiker that was most likely on his last legs. The one horn was sheared off, with the other horn already withered away at the base from age.
Simply a giant in his own world.

They really do offer a great hunt. This was on one of the cattle/small stock farms in our area. The predator control is on point. We run hounds in these areas to try and keep them clean, so probably a better chance of survival around here.

Here is a very large Stallion hunted with us. Zebra are one of the species where both sexes get hunted, and also quite necessary. Often, the mares will offer better, cleaner skins than the Stallions. To the untrained eye, telling the difference between mares and stallions can be challenging for. What are your go to markers for distinguishing between males and females?

Another great Waterbuck bull taken in one of our low fenced areas. One thing is almost universal with all hunters, and that is the surprise at the size of a Waterbuck bull. With its stout, thick neck and compact body, they can often outweigh a Kudu bull.

The musky smell is also unmistakable, leaving an oily residue on touch. This musky smell is often their downfall when you put good tracking hounds on a wounded animal.

This is a serious Black Wildebeest bull. After crawling a few yards, we managed to perch up over a rock and found three bulls together trying their luck with the herd bull. With their concentration firmly on each other, we managed to get setup for a very comfortable 150 yard shot. This bull certainly stood out above the rest and has everything one should look for in a Black Wildebeest bull. Big, cracked bosses and a big sweep.

Seems like the more open the terrain, the more wild Hartebeest get. With a little bit of intuition, we made a big loop and came over the back of the only hill in the area. We had to lay down for close to an hour, waiting for this bull to make his way to a respectable shooting distance. Only one mistake was made, and it wasn't by us.

After spotting this bull around mid morning with some cows, we waited for him to descend lower on the opposite hills face in order to close the distance. We watched him for quite a while, only for him to follow the cows into a large thicket.

Once we were comfortable that they were settled for their morning bed, we pulled out and decided on an early lunch. We decided to get back out there a little earlier, and sit and wait him out.

We got back at roughly 14:00, and settled in on the road straight across the thicket where they entered. It wasn't long before the first Kudu cow showed herself, starting to feed for the afternoon session. Roughly 30 minutes later, the bull showed flashes of himself feeding. With the direction of the matriarch feeding, there were plenty of open gaps in the bush where we would get a chance.
We found a gap in the road allowing our hunter to lie down prone for a comfortable shot, and he made no mistakes. Another 50"+ Cape Kudu bull with some substantial ivory.

Once I laid eyes on this Blue Wildebeest bull, there was simply nothing else I would settle for. This can sometimes be a downfall, when you try to stalk past perfectly good bulls, just to get to the one that have caught your eye. Sometimes this simply doesn't work out. This time, it did. This is a world class bull, that came out of a fully self sustainable herd. Teeth almost at their end.

Lechwe are such stunning animals and their beauty always amazes me. There seems to be quite the variation in terms of the label for a male. For most part, we have always and have seen them referred to as bulls. Lately, I have seen them referred to as a ram. Is it a ram or bull? They are interchangeable.

What say you?

When you see a high quality animal such as this, there are absolutely no second guesses. Once we saw this ram, we immediately decided to pursue. After a stalk through some undergrowth to stay hidden, we came out roughly 150 yards from where we spotted this ram with his ewe. It was evident that something was going on, simply by the two younger rams that had caught her scent and came to investigate.
After getting busted by some Blesbuck, the pair continued to walk away from us, as we tried to balance a pace of not getting left behind, but also avoid from being seen. We managed to catch a glimpse of their position where the laid down, as Common Reedbuck often do when sensing danger. We proceeded to stalk to a mere 80 yards and waited.
After roughly an hour, the Blesbuck decided to investigate our area again, and once again got spooked, only to run right by the pair, getting him to stand up which was enough of an opportunity at that distance to close the deal.
An absolutely magnificent Common Reedbuck ram, with great secondary growth.

The royal antelope of the Eastern Cape. A Lovely Bushbuck ram for our hunter. Finding rams with ivory tips such as this one, still gets us excited. We don't see it often, so its a treat for us as Professional Hunters to find these extraordinary features on these special animals.

This bull was worth the wait. It took Professional Hunter and hunter 4 days to finally find what they were looking for. With an irregular rut, paired with a full moon, things did not come easy. This was the second bull for the week to stretch the tape past the magical 50" mark for the Eastern Cape.

The next generation getting it done! We always preach how important anti-hunter education is, no matter how difficult it sometimes can be trying to argue facts against their emotions. Another factor which is just as, if not more important, is keeping the traditions and good, ethical practises alive through exposing our younger generations to our traditions.

Here our hunter got involved in the actions with a great, past his prime Springbuck ram, a Common Duiker showing secondary growth as well as a beautiful Impala ram.
