Bill, I would guess they probably do if calling has been practiced. While reptiles have no ears, they do have external ear openings, and they will identify with voices, doors opening, keys dangling in the open door. I have had tortises as pets for over 20 years. They respond to,"turtle, turtle, turtle!". It doesn't seem to matter who says it. They identify the vibrations that go with the words. As an experiment I have often used other words such as "dinner time", "fresh fruit", "got lizards", and "pizza" to name a few. The response is almost nil. But I imagine every situation is different.
Saeed, do your crocs respond to your voice? Or to any particular stimulus not found in nature?
Andy

I have some pretty simple lizards that know their names and know 'me' from others. One I have had for 22 years and he does not appear to be slowing down soon.

I imagine larger herps, like tortoises and crocs will go a lot longer in years. Very recently someone was looking to rehome a Nile croc on www.kingsnake.com. He was pretty honest about the animal. While it 'knew' him it would still eat him if it had the opportunity.

Like all animals, they will think of you as one of them, if they are familiar with you. And will readily treat you accordingly and according to the current 'pecking order'. Which they ALWAYS will test as nature demands, particularly in wild animals. But your domesticated pets will also climb the chain of order if allowed.

After all, everyone wants to be #1 in the pack!

If you are not one of them you are either food or an enemy.

Legistine actu quod scripsi?

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

We feed them any meat we get. Sometimes they get fish when our friends bring us fish they do not want.

In the photo above they were being fed chickens, as we had school kids visiting, and wanted them to throw the food at them.

Yes, they come when they are called.

We have only one which has a name - Walter! He is the biggest and nastiest of the lot.

He likes to sleep right by the gate.

I found him sleeping once, so crept close and tapped him on the head with a stick. The bloody thing just opened one eye - the one towards me, gave me one look, and went back to sleep!

We named him Walter because he bit his name sake when he was about 2 feet long. We keep asking Walter to go and get anothe bite now, sadly, he keeps refusing!

We had piranhas with them when they were young, and everyone refused to go into the pond at that time. Scared more of piranha's than crocs!

I think I have a photo of me in the pond setting the drain switch. I will try to find it and post.

I love the harness shot (looks like monofilament for fishing). "Oh nothing, just taking my croc for a little morning walk..."

Saeed, you sure have some scary looking, um... pets. Smiler

Once again, I'll take your word for it that the residents of your personal zoo are perfectly safe for *you* to be around, but I am reminded of another's misfortune with a similar beast in some zoo (in Asia, I believe). If that guy was a pianist, his playing with this guy was a poor career move... Eeker

Warning: graphic pics.

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."

Did a bit of quick digging. It happened in Taiwan, and the croc's little chew toy belongs to a Mr. Chang, a vet at the zoo. They tranquilized the croc soon after, and Mr. Chang had his hand reattached in surgery.

Bet he's glad the croc wasn't in a really hungry mood that day!

My guess to the cause of the mishap in Taiwan is that the tranqs and an antibiotic were mistaken for each other. Thats what happens in Taiwan when things are written in englishSmiler

I always wondered what Captain Hook's original name was.

Liberals believe that criminals are just like them and guns cause crimes. Conservatives believe criminals are different and that it is the criminals that cause crimes. Maybe both are right and the solution is to keep guns away from liberals.
