Very sad news indeed. My condolences go out to his friends and family.

This from the Thormahlen Safaris website:

Erwin Kotze' was born in Rundu Namibia. His parents moved to northern Botswana where he grew up on a farm. Erwin has been hunting professionally since 2006. He joined T&C Safaris Namibia Pty Ltd in 2008 as Master Hunting Guide. In 2009 he became a Professional Hunter and has guided a big number of our Namibian clients on plains game and leopard hunts. He is currently working on his Big 5 license for Namibia.

This is so tragic. I have never hunted with Erwin, but I did have a couple long chats with him at the Dallas show. He seemed like a really nice guy that was enthusiastic about his job.

The last few years seem to have been appallingly bad for hunting related accidents of all kinds and let's hope we all stay & hunt safe in the coming season.

My condolences to the family.

I received an email message from Peter and Anso Thormahlen this morning that confirms this tragedy. I never had the chance to hunt with Erwin, but did spend some enjoyable time with him at the campfire several years ago while hunting with another PH working with T&F. Erwin was a bright, outgoing, fun-loving and enjoyable young man who I hoped I would get to hunt with one day. Several others I know who did hunt with him over the past severalyears reported great experiences, both with the hunting and with Erwin. Condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and clients... all will miss him.

Not sure, but believe this is the young man that was on Expedition Safaris with Mike Rogers not long ago guiding Mike on a PG hunt.

MAN! This has been a couple of tuff years for PHs and a couple of clients as well.

I don’t know Erwin but that makes no difference, the PH professional has a very dangerous job, but is a job that they love. I’m sure Erwin was no different, and did what he wanted to do for a living.

My sincere condolences to his family and friends, and my hope for Erwin is that he can now hunt the fields of old because he is now part of the fabric of the Africa shared by many PHs of old that we all love. It is certain that Erwin will be fondly remembered by all his clients, tracker, and colleagues alike! I wish I had had an opportunity to know him personally!

…………………………………………...........................................R.I.P. Erwin!

We had the great pleasure of sharing camp with Erwin last October - his loss leaves a great hole in our community. Erwin was the kind of guy that steals the air from a room with his presence.

May he hunt in eternity

For those who live uprightly and die true
Heaven has no bars or locks,
And serves all taste...or what's for him to do
Up there, but hunt the game?
Angelic choirs? No, Justice must provide
For one who rose straight and in hunting died.

So if Heaven had no Hunt before he came,
Why, it must find one now:
If any shirk and doubt they know the game,
There's one to teach them now:
And the whole host of Seraphim complete
Must jog in scarlet to his opening Meet.
