While in RSA last year we just missed the opportunity to watch them removing game from one of the Ranches using the chopper and funnelling them into the trucks.

Since the mention of the Cull/Management hunts elsewhere, This got me to thinking. How much would a ranch owner get for say an Impala cow or any of the other females?

I was offered the opportunity to take part in a Springbok cull when I'm next over for something like 15%-20% of the trophy fee for a trophy Ram. Could ranch owners do something like this rather than go to the hassel/expense of rounding
up and transporting excess stock? they would get to keep the meat and although I know skins aren't worth a lot it all adds up.

Personally me and a freind took a dozen animals in 5 days, (including my pigs..) and I turned down at least another 4-6. If I could stalk on foot and shoot two dozen animals for less money then perhaps it could make an interesting change.

I appreciate this isn't going to be everyones cup of tea but it is an angle. I'm just ot sure where the economics stand.

As a side thought it would be a great way to introduce a kid to Africa without the expense of a full on trophy hunt.

Hi Fallow buck

What you want to do sounds like the typical biltong hunt for a local guy, though your dayfees are normally slightly more than a biltong hunter's. (Even with an over run of PH's in SA, the good/ honest ones do not come cheap). It can be done, it works great if the group are around about 6, but 2-8 all works. We do a lot of culling of springbok & blesbok, though if someone is prepared to take lesser (broken horned/ old female) animals, they can have these at same prices as biltong hunters. Execpt trophy hunting in Southern Africa, I also run a large biltong hunt consern in Namibia and South Africa, so if you are really interested, contact me via karl@huntingsafaris.net to discuss further.
