West Africa is one option for western Roan and the other for the southern Roan is with me in the Kafue or Thor in the Luangwa.

I would advise the Zambia option and you will be in spectacular big game country.

Thor has a Roan for this year and could cut you a great deal. Maybe ask him to find a buff nearby and I think Nyakolwe has quota and is a first class hunting block.

Late season is better. Last year we hunted Roan here in the rains and tracked them up in the soft soils. The finest of hunting.

Johnny,

Go for my recommendation and the safari will be all that you wish for. Fantastic rivers and the roar of lion around camp.

Just check the AR hunt reports

This hunt report shows Fairgame's camp and the Roan and Buffalo I took there as well as a few other critters.
Cheers
Jim

I'll second Thor Kirchner in the Luangwa Valley. Although I didn't hunt them I saw plenty of Roan. Thor has excellent buffalo as well.

If you want Roan, and it's your first time, Zambia is probably your best bet. Kafue or some luangwa areas, and also some of the eastern have roan...both Luangwa hunts I was on did not have them as quota, they were on quota at Tondwa, but since I was told it wa iffy, I didn't buy the hunt for it, and of course saw a lot of sign.

West Africa is a rather difficult place to start, unless you speak French. Yes, you can do roan and buff there and it's wild Africa, but the infrastructure for the hunting industry is not really there. To give it its due, I saw more roan in Cameroon than I have everywhere else combined.

Tanzania is another choice, but the money is definitely more there. If money is no object, a western Tanzanian full bag hunt is something you should consider. Great buffalo and quite a few nice roan.

I know Zim has just opened a very limited amount of Roan hunting, and as such it's likely difficult to get quota for it.

Mozambique would be an option, but lately there has been some unrest there.

South Africa is also an option, but it will not be wild population hunting.

Andrew has posted some really nice ones over the years here, so I would definitely talk with him.

Mozambique does not officially have roan on quota as yet but a couple of operators in Tete are expecting them next year.

Hi Johnny

I can offer you a buff Roan in either Upper Lupande in Zambia or Dande east in Zim ( the FIRST and ONLY) Roan tag for Zim. I am hunting at moment but if you are interested email Myles on hunting@cmsafaris.com and he will send you the info! All the best Buzz

JR,

I highly recommend Andrew Baldrey (Fairgame) at Royal Kafue Safaris. I did this very hunt, Roan/buffalo, with Andrew two years ago. Took about five or six other PG animals as well. Great hunt! Great PH!

I hunt and guide in Burkina, Benin and Cameroon. We do western buffalo, Roan and all the other species.
I would say the cheapest way to take a roan is a hunt in Benin or Burkina.
Numbers are good in all three countries. Quality of roan is best in Cameroon.

If you want a cape buff with your roan, you best bet is Zambia. I have read great reports from Thor's and buzz's areas.
