Anyone ever Trophy a Snake?

Dangerous Game and all that…but have any of you ever trophied a snake?

I swear, if I see a cobra or a puffie I damn well may trophy that bastard. That is, after I dump a mag plus into it.

Interesting!
Does anyone here know the legalities of killing and talking the skin from a snake? Can it be brought to the US without violation of the law?

i seriously doubt it is legal to import a skin here and i have a feeling it is illegal to kill one there- although i have done it( an up close and personal mamba). best just give them a wide berth. cobras and puff adders are so slow they are not a big deal. in fact i have some pictures/video of me fiddling around with them using shooting sticks. mambas- well, not so much. they scare me....

Back in the late '70s, my uncle killed a cobra in Lybia. He had boots and a wallet made and wore them home. Not suggesting that you do that today but they were cool.

I dont know about the legality of taking the skin back to the states, but i believe some outfitters in Cameroon have rhino vipers, gabon vipers and rock pythons on quota.

A Gabon viper skin would sure look nice!

I think Cameroon is the only country that officially has snakes on the quota.

I have shot there a python and the skin was shipped without problems to Germany.

But I do not know about the US.

Robert,

I can't answer your question but I bet US,F&W would have some words of wisdom. I don't love snakes myself but I've never thought of them as trophies. We found a 16 foot python one time and I thought it was just such an amazing creature that I don't think I could have shot it. Just my opinion.

We found a road killed cobra on the road and it was still alive. Gary Tonks said since it was road kill he probably could get an export permit (cobras are protected in RSA). It was not taken care of properly so could not do a mount but the skin hangs in my office.

The real question is whether you could get an African to skin it. We came across a recently killed cobra in Masailand. The PH wanted the skin. He had to skin it himself as none of the guys would touch it.

I shot this "average sized" black mamba with my 28 gauge Beretta O/U in the Selous in 2012 as the PH said it was too near an anti-poaching camp. Afterwards, I asked if there was any way to bring the skin back to the U.S. with me. I was told that they don't preserve very well "in the salt", that he doesn't, "like to get anywhere near the damn things", and in any case my two rounds of #6 shot didn't leave the skin in very good shape. At the time, all three points seemed to make leaving the remains for the vultures a good idea.

When I was in sixth grade I spent most of my class time in the principal's office -- by design.

Seems like Sister Theresa, my teacher, didn't like me much so it was easy to provoke her into sending me to the principal's office; some punishment. Sister Theresa quit hitting me with a stick and I had a nice chair where I could sit in the principal's office and pretend to read Time magazine.

The principal, Sister Antoinette, was a drop dead gorgeous, dark haired, blue-eyed, Irish nun with a broghe. My first love. I have no clue what Time magazine reported from 1972-73.

Many a time I've wished I could go back to grade school so I could spend more time under the teachers desk like I did before I learned what was under there. One of those examples of: "smart too late".

Hey, that snake crushing the doe would make a dandy example for the "natural animal killers" discussed in another thread.
