I was just wondering if anyone heard how hunting was going in Angola so far? Thanks. Well, since Castro is no longer interested in expanding his brand of pure communism to west Africa - I suppose it might be OK for an American to try hunting among the locals. Personally, I wouldn't advise it. I was in Zimbabwe in 1993 and at that time my PH told me bad tales about the behaviour of Cubans in Angola - and wanted to know why my powerful country didn't squelch those people. I had no answer (that can be printed here)

Gerrypeters, you're about two decades behind the times. If you had been in Zimbabwe ("Southern Rhodesia") a couple of decades earlier than 1993 you might well have been having a hard time retaining your epidermis. The Cubans have been gone from Angola for so long that hardly anyone there remembers them. Angola is still struggling with modernizing their government and economy and clearing antiquated land mines from the countryside, but it is opening up and potentially represents some outstanding hunting and touring opportunities in the not-to-distant future.

Stonecreek: My PH had been a scout when it was still "Southern Rhodesia". He told me about people who had lived in Angols - and this was in 1993. (I may be behind today - but in 1993 I was not "a couple of decades" behind. If you think that communism in Africa is out of date -I suggest that you watch out for the oilfields. BTW,this old man is curious why someone in Kansas is so eager to protect guerillas acting against what you say is an organized government. Just asking.

Well that was fun! Anyone have any idea about how hunts have been this year if they have indeed taken place in Angola? I consider myself somewhat knowledgeable about what's going on in Southern Africa.....but I definitely missed something here! ![]() ![]()

![]() I too am interested in who's been there and what they've killed. Next year I'm in Zim for the fifth time, mainly to accompany an older friend who's never hunted in Africa. After that, I'm thinking about Angola or Uganda. This exchange brought back memories on this forum - what ever happened to the guy that whenever you mentioned Zimbabwe basically promised you'd get your privates lobbed off if you went there? Can't remember his screen name. Good times.

Roger Whittal was to start hunting in Southern Angola this past August, but the hunts were cancelled due to ????. Ken Wilson of Sportsmen on Film is his booking agent and still lists them on his website. I believe the problem is that Angola doesn't even have any hunting laws on their books and Mr. Whittal was dealing with local officials who were eager to get some concession revenue, but never had authority to authorize the hunts. Perhaps Ken Wilson or Mr. Whittal could comment in more detail. I was interested in booking, but was warned by an experienced PH that the hunts were unlikely to ever commence. David Keith can probably give us a better idea of what is going on with regards to the situation in Angola. I spoke with him in Dallas and afterwards regarding hunting there, but subsequently heard from a knowledgeable source that the hunting proposed was not going to happen quite yet. Thus far that appears to be the case. Hopefully everything can get squared away and hunting can commence. I would be very interested in seeing open up. "...Africa. I love it, and there is no reason for me to explore why. She affects some people that way, and those who feel as I do need no explanation." from The Last Safari

I read a couple of years ago that serious effors are being made to conserve the Royal giant sable - a small population was found & photos were taken and even some live capture videos were posted IIRC. It would be incredible wild, adventurous hunting in its true sense. "When the wind stops....start rowing. When the wind starts, get the sail up quick."

Having spent entirely too much time in that s**t hole during the mid/late 90's, two words come to mind when thinking of Angola: land mines. Additionally, that place holds my record as the filthiest county I've ever been in. That was a while back, though, so maybe things have improved. I have absolutely no fond memories of that miserable place.

Yes, it's up in the air currently. It's been on again, off again for some time. Hard to get definitive answers as to what is going to happen. I'm awaiting some news in the near future as one of my PH friends is doing some exploratory investigations within the country. I'm hoping by Dallas we'll be rolling for next year. Currently it seems the air was let out of the balloon. My advice would be to let the dust settle before making any plans. I met with Roger Whittal at his Humani ranch last week for lunch and received an update on the proposed Angola hunting. He has secured a large area for hunting and is in the process of drafting game laws for Angola. There is also the need for firearms permit paperwork etc. etc. which Roger is working on in conjuntion with the Angolan government as well. Roger is still optimistic about hunting in Angola taking place next season and was talking to me about starting a list of interested clients. I will keep you posted as I find out more.

Keep in mind I was there several times during the war, and also during one of the truces. I have never seen so many amputees anywhere, both single and double. Orphaned children everywhere. Unexploded ordinance laying around on the airport ramp. 82mm mortar rounds buried almost up to the fins. People squatting on benches on the waterfront in Luanda and crapping on the sidewalk. We called the park located between the Presidente Meridien Hotel and the seaport gate the OK Corral because there were nightly shootouts, with rounds occasionally making it through a window or two. Nobody slept near the windows. As I said, that was a long time ago. I could go on about the place for a while, but I have nothing constructive or current to offer, so I'll shut up.
