OK. So I have been reading all the posts on AR and other threads and I have read the articles in the magazines and all, seen the shows on tv, but does any one here have any actual experience with the 375 Ruger on African game? I would rather this didn't turn into a rant about H&H vs...but I can't stop that.
I would however just like to hear about your experiences, good or bad.
I was looking at the Ruger website earlier today and the African just looks like a classy DG rifle. Of course looks aren't everything.
Also I would be interested to hear the opinions of any PH's who have used or seen this cartridge used on African game from the tiny to the tembo...
Thanks guys,
Brian

Please for give me if this sounds stupid, but does this make any sense. If I have a Barnes .375 300 gr TSX going 2700 fps, does it really make a difference if it's shot from an H&H or a Ruger. Ballistics are what they are. My feeling is that the bullet has more of an impact on performance then the cartridge does, if all else is equal.

Allout,

Check the 'Big Bores' forum; there are a couple of hunt results posted there, although not of African hunts.

At the Dallas show, I spent some time with my long time friend, Randal who has been with Ruger for years. We discussed the .375 Ruger at length, but the current problem is getting one. Also, unless you reload, your bullet choices currently are Hornady. We also discussed and I examined some new rifles and cartridges from Ruger. Personally, I like the RSM's and checked out the .416 Rigby he had on display. If you want to ask Randal about the .375 Ruger, PM me and I'll give you his contact info. He's hunted Africa a number of times and I believe he used the 375 Ruger on his Buff hunt with Craig (Tracks across Africa). Good hunting, David

Allout,

Shipster is correct. Your question is illogigal. If I could throw a 300 grn solid at 2500 fps and impart enought spin to stabilize it it would have the same effect as a 375hh...

If I could stand next to Saedd and throw one at about 2700 it would have the same effect as his 375/404,.

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

I am very sorry to have disturbed a few of you with my apparently, absurd and illogical question. As previously stated I have read the other threads, other forums, seen the shows, read the articles, etc. I know the Ruger is going to kill, no doubt about it. LDK, thank you. I am sending you a PM.
You gentlemen all try and have a nice day now ya hear.

Allout,
I think perhaps your approach to the subject is misdirected..The killing power of both the 375s and a host of others is equal, end of story..

The advantages of the .375 Ruger are a standard length action and it is not a belted cartridge, The 375 Ruger could be made into a more compact and probably lighter rifle, but with more recoil and so fourth.. Many folks put an emphisis on this..otherwise one is as good as another.

The bottom line is if I had a 375 H&H, then I would not sell it and run out and buy me a Ruger but if I did not then I would give the new Ruger a serious look. I happen to have an old .375 H&H, so I opted to build myself a .416 Ruger on the same case...

As to how it would work in Africa or anywhere else I agree that if you have hunted with a .375 H&H and are qualified to tell someone exactly how the .375 Ruger will fare in old Africa and it will perform well indeed.

As to the rifle itself, the Ruger is a fantastic factory rifle IMO..We have had a .416 Rigby camp rifle for years and it works on everything without a hitch...
