That book by Boddington is a classic.

A friend of mine is a PR person in the industry. After a get together this person dropped CB off at the airport. They had time for lunch, but Craig declined - instead he opened his laptop and started writing.

Do you honestly think he would post here for free? He can hold his own among us, but he doesn't write for fun, he does it for money. And he ain't making a dime on AR.

There are two well known writers who post on the internet. One is John Barsness. The other is Phil Shoemaker. I suppose you could throw in Ken Howell too.

I have probably thrown away a few thousand dollars posting here instead of writing, but I don't write for money, I do it for fun. And I have learned a lot too.

Larry Brown does frequently. Michael McIntosh and Douglas Tate used to. All three are shotgun writers, but they haven't put their columns on the 'net. They sometimes have answered newbie posts, or other questions regarding provenance and such of particular guns.

I really like Michael McIntosh. Kind of pics up a bit where Gene Hill left off (but like O'Connor, Hill was one of a kind).

AAZW,

You were around when CB posted here, although I obviously can't know whether you followed any of the threads where he contributed. At the time, he seemed more than happy to contribute with some of his extensive experience from Africa. I remember him chiming in on a thread regarding locations for large leopards, among other subjects.

But it seems to have gone lost, that CB was flooded with hate posts. There was no end to the posters who knew everything better than he, and who were not exactly gracious about it. He was riddled with vitriolic replies regarding his rank in the Marine Corps, and I believe there was also a discussion about selling his David Miller rifle (to pay for college tuition for his daughter). In a word, it was the usual AR reaction - and some posters made full use of their privilege to speak up, to make sure they shouted down a member, whom they perceived as publicly known in the shooting community. It was naturally important, that the world at large was aware, that THEY were in no way inferior to this person (as if anybody had ever suggested as much - and certainly not CB, who came across as very helpful and modest).

After a while of this, CB stopped posting here, and I certainly can't blame him. After all, he is not the only person with valuable contributions to be made, who has been run off by vitriolic replies and apparent inferiority complexes.

Amen, and we are none the richer for losing that experience...and thanks again for an excellent article Nick!

MHO:

I did a search on his name and see the threads that you guys are talking about.

No, I didn't follow many of them, only the one about free hunts, about which CB asked some questions, to which I sent a PM and never heard another word.

But I didn't see the other posts...

Frankly, I was appalled at the way Boddington was treated by some (regular) members here. There was no call for it at all. Saeed should have stepped in and stopped it.

I see the dates this all occurred were before I registered. But he posted a few times after that; I thought that was the extent. Wow, guess I was wrong!

AAZW,

just to make sure no mistakes arise. I was not in any way pointing my finger at you. I think I was simply recounting a sad story about poor treatment of other members, even ones with a lot to contribute. Your post simply brought up the issue.

I don't get the hate for CB? Since a I was a kid he has been my favourite US based gun writer (I typically prefer the Africans). Why do people think he is such a dick? I enjoy his work greatly.

Your comment reminds me of the first time I met Dick Metcalf on a PD hunt. I told him that I had been reading him since I was a kid.

"Do you know how many times I hear that?" he said. "I don't like it - means I am getting old."

Dick M. is a really fascinating guy to BS with. Very smart; former college professor.
