Heard about this 3-4 days ago. They were worried at first but luckily no serious injury. He was out cold for a while with a concussion. Thank the Lord Almighty he is not seriously injured and Godspeed recovery! I was surprised how long it took to show up here. In the old days…it would have been posted here before the plane got to Harare. Sign of the times I guess. I started to post it Tuesday but figured it wasn’t my place. I like the "The client with Myles had the presence of mind to shoot the animal before too much damage was done"  Presumably it was the client that wounded the buffalo so I imagine he wouldn't have much moral option but to shoot it off Miles. Thankfully what could easily have been a tragic outcome was averted. | |||

Thank God Miles will be okay. All of these incidents should be carefully examined and publicized so we can learn from the mistakes made and how to avoid them. Use enough gun and be sure of your first shot. STAY IN THE FIGHT! | |||

There is nothing to be learned. Each incident is different but the same. One wounds a buffalo unintentionally. Follow up. Most of the times it keeps running away until a lucky shot kills it. On very rare occasions the tables are turned, and one does not see it before it is on to of him. There is also occasions when a member of the party involved sends his brains on vacation. And someone suffers. Not long ago I saw a video of a professional hunter going after a wounded buffalo carrying a shooting stick. No rifle. It clobbered him. I have followed lots of wounded buffalo. Most were found dead not long after. Some got into rather bad places, but we’re lucky to be able to get a shot in before any funny ideas from the buffalo. At the end of the day, hunting, regardless of what, does entail danger to all involved. Accept it, and try to avoid it. | |||

Below is part of a message I received from Myles, he is very lucky. Also, I was told that the game scout joined in with his rifle as well. Morgan, mentioned below, is a tracker. “I’m recovering really well. I cannot remember a thing about getting whacked so only know what the camera man told me 1. My shot was off . 2. The buff broke cover at full gallop only 9foot from me 3. It Knocked me out cold and luckily got its horns stuck in a small bush 4. Left me for Morgan who it tossed 4 feet 5. My hunter basically sorted it out whilst all this was going on!” Karl Evans | |||

This incident shows you no matter how careful you are, sometimes all precautions are useless. Good thing his client had the presence of mind to kill the buffalo quickly. Be nice to know how Morgan is. | |||

I don't know that you can say at this stage that everyone was careful. From the information posted on the AH forum Miles and party were tracking a wounded buffalo, i.e. it did not charge directly after the clients shot/shots. From what Miles has said it charged at full gallop from 9 feet so it seems it was not incapacitated at all from the clients initial shot/s and it set up the perfect ambush. I imagine after a shot at a buffalo that takes to its heels that the PH and client would quickly ascertain if the shot was a good one or not. That sort of information should go some way to determining how a follow up is conducted. Thankfully we didn't have another African hunting tragedy with both Miles and Morgan both escaping serious injury or death by shear good luck. | |||

Problem is when the wounded buffalo goes into very thick bush. You don’t see it until you are on top of it. Not much you can do about this situation. I have been in similar situations. Where a wounded buffalo is in a nasty thicket. We went around it from every angle. Nothing could be seen. We threw stones, trying to get it to move. Nothing happened. You are left with one option. Go in. We did. My luck was he jumped up towards me. I fired without the rifle getting to my shoulders. Luckily my shot brained him. I think he was about 15 feet from me. This is just one occasion. We have had several, similar, but managed to kill them on the ground, as they normally were facing in other directions, unlike this one which was lying facing me. Lots of things in hunting depend on luck. And when yours run out, there is not much you can do. Last year we were putting a lion bait, when we saw the Lion trotting towards us. He was in the open, just before sunset. We hid behind the bait tree. He stopped less than a 100 yards from us, facing us. I fired at him and jumped a bit and took off. My PH was screaming for me to shoot again. Trouble was I couldn’t see him enough to shoot as he ran between the trees. He kept growling for a bit, then everything went quiet. We followed him. Horrible grass and thickets. But no other choice. We went into any area we thought he might be. Was getting hard to see as the sun was down. Then one of our trackers saw him. Lying dead 10 feet away!! Imagine what might have happened if he was alive. I do agree that one should take every precaution to make sure no one gets hurt. But sometimes things just tend to go wrong. Going after that lion, the trackers were trying to see tracks or blood. Nothing was visible. Both Alan and me did not walk behind them, but stayed to either side of them. Just in case he was alive, and charges, we wanted to have a clear line to shoot, rather than trying to shoot and avoid hitting one of the trackers. Some of the videos on the Net about hunting give me the creeps! | |||

BINGO! The "use enough gun" philosophy is precisely the reason why this occurs and frankly the absolute worse advice one can give. Yeah, shit happens, but more often than not a preventable error. That mindset shows complete lack of understanding of what you're doing. A compensation for poor preparation (both shooting skills and anatomy) and a lack of discipline while hunting- typical little dick SCI types. Besides, shooting buff with a rifle is cheating. Shot my first buff with a bow last year. Dropped in half the distance and half the time from a 3-7-5 shot and did not require a follow up....use enough gun my ass. Whatsapped Butch Coaton last night. He wasn't in the Save at the time but said Myles is doing fine. Thank God for that. Looking forward to flipping Myles some shit the next time I see him. No one else knows what they are doing and do not prepare, hunting DG with a rifle is cheating, if you're an SCI member you must have a small dick, and blow your horn about dropping a buffalo with a bow faster than a gun.. Great to hear the guys are going to be ok, dangerous game hunting is dangerous. Preparation hunting and shooting skills are everything, and shit can still happen to anyone. Don't kid yourself, be prepared, and hunt with great PH's, and most of all listen. | |||

100% correct. I've never understood the mentality of "your PH will get you out of trouble if things go pear shaped". That may very well be the case, but I'll always be prepared by being familiar with my rifle and ammo. It's one of the reasons I'll never resort to using camp rifles, unless my own rifles don't show up. | |||
