Mike that is an very instructive (and exciting) piece of film but what struck me was the effect of each of the shots. The first from the 500 double seems to have little effect while the first from the 416 bolt gets a stager but it is the second from the 500 that puts it down. Was the second 416 shot an insurance or a finisher? A man on his own may have been in trouble there. Thanks for posting this. Von Gruff. | |||

None of the first three shots brained the elephant -- they did, as shown on the video, stop the charge. The cow got up, staggered off about 10 yards and we put two more shots into her, one of which is Buzz's second shot while I was reloading. On the video right after Buzz's second shot the camera zooms out, and sort of pans to the left and you can see the tail end of an elephant. That is the cow and that is where she dropped for good. Yes, I fire, then Buzz, then I fire again. Then we run back a little and Buzz fires a second shot, then not on the clip I fire again. In the picture the three bullet holes are my first two shots and Buzz's first shot. The last two shots were not frontal shots. Clear as mud? Mike | |||

Two holes right there by the fly.  The third hole is up the top part of the head -- follow the two blood trails. One comes from where the two holes are and the other comes from the bullet hole on the top of the forehead on the right.Mike | |||

Mike...I'm very impressed how you BOTH read the situation and kept your COOLS...Extremely well done IMHO and great instinctive shooting ...Hats off to the both of you... I know nothing about DG hunting and ELE's nontheless, but as a mere SPECTATOR to the sport...I say DARN impressive sir...to you and Buzz...   I can't imagine it getting better than that for a true ELE hunter...very exciting indeed...CONGRATS!!! | |||

If I had to guess I would guess that the high shot was the last one as the ele was starting to tumble down. Either that, or Buzz shot high.  Mike | |||

Mike: I think that is certainly possible. Hard to tell from the video. I am asking these questions for education reasons. I am not trying to give you any grief. If the high shot is the last one, do you have any ideas why your first one didn't drop the elephant?. Your first and Buzz's first are so close. If I understand correctly (which I might not) you were shooting a 500NE and he was shooting a 416. Given their placement, I would have thought that either would have stopped the charge. Thanks. | |||

Like the others, credit the good camera work. I have been in the same position and getting charged with a camera in your hands is a lot worse than when you are holding a double rifle -he kept the frame right and followed the movement of the action with a steady hand. Outstanding work. Good shootiing too boys - that looked like fun. | |||

The video in this thread is reminiscent of one which was posted on Youtube and was brought to our attention in this thread The video contained footage of PH Gordon Duncan who was guiding bowhunter Razor Dobbs at the time, dropping a charging bull at his toes using a .375. Unfortunately the video which had been available here has been removed from Youtube by the user (poor form). Does anyone have access to that footage? I would like to compare notes. | |||

Ivan, you are correct. The cow took her tumble at five paces from us. I think video is actually more realistic in terms of distance if the cameraman hangs back a bit. When the cameraman is right over your shoulder distances do look farther. I would not trade my double for a camera, that's for sure. Mike | |||

How could ANY MAN NOT want to experience that?!?! Just like the lion charge video that has the brute die on the feet/shins of the PH who was charged and made the kill shot after the lady client had wounded it earlier, this footage has the viewer really IN THE MOMENT. I hope my day comes. To all those who have said a charge should not happen if you do everything right, I say, I hope to experience one. It's just that simple. Shooting a charging DG animal at close distance while it charges is a far better trophy to me than a pair of 100 pound tusks taken by shooting a bull who is 20 yards away and standing still.
