My daughter wants to hunt Buffalo as a graduation present from high school in 2009. We are lookiing at either Tanzania or the Caprivi in Namibia for the Buffalo. I would love to hunt Namibia or Botswana for plains game. Ideally, we would hunt two different countries, plains game in one and buffalo in the other. I would like recommendations on outfitters who can accomodate us. Dave Dave One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got into my pajamas I'll never know. - Groucho Marx

Boomer: Call Wendell Reich at Hunters Quest. I don't have his number or E-mail but if you do a search here you can find it. Three of us are booked with him for Tanzania this Oct. for buffalo-plains game. In the area we booked he has a pretty good selection of plains game along with very good buffalo. Kigosi is the area [1.9 million acres]. This sound like a great hunt for you and your daughter. My daughter is 23 now and we didn't have the opportunity to do this when she graduated. Now we are awaiting the day when our grandkids are old enough to go to Africa with us. Feel free to contact me anytime. Regards, Joe Cunningham

boomer, As I understand it, the Caprivi is very different from the rest of Namibia. A buff there after some pg hunting elsewhere in the country would almost be like hunting in 2 different countries, but with simplified logistics. Dave, I have done two countries in one trip and it gets to be a bit of a pain and one of the countires was RSA. I would try to stay in one county and I would consider Zim or Zambia. Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue. What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

I'd echo the comment above about Namibia. I think you would find the plains game hunting good and the Caprivi is a wonderful venue. Contact Vaughn Fulton, Classic Safaris, at: Windhoek.vfulton@africaonline.com.na You can Google his name and company and hit his web site. Kudude

Mike: Thanks for the tip, but I did RSA and Tanzania on my first trip and had no troubles at all. I guess it is a matter of the luck of the draw, although I was hunting with the same company in both countries. Dave One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. If looking at a 2 country hunt, might consider some of the SA operators that are branching out into Moz these days. I think there are a few on this board. Caleb

If you have the time it wouldn't be a problem to hunt two countries. Depending upon the route you take, it could be very simple or somewhat complicated. Permits should be the only logistics to work out. Have you considered northern RSA, say the Limpopo region for PG? It would be an easy hop into Zimbabwe for Buff or Moz. I would say you'll need 14 days at the very minimum. If I can help you are welcome to email me. Just adding links where they were not available: Wendell Reich Vaughan Fulton Wendell can book a hunt with Vaughan if you prefer to deal with someone stateside. My girls and I hunted with Wendell in Texas and Wendell booked my hunt with Vaughan's company. I enjoyed seeing both of them at DSC. I think you have some great choices available to you. I would like to take my oldest daughter to Africa for graduation but the jury is still out (she does have a few years to go). ------------------------------- Some Pictures from Namibia Some Pictures from Zimbabwe An Elephant Story

You may want to get in touch with Mark Kyriacou at MK.birdsaf@worldnet.att.net I just booked a buffalo/plainsgame hunt with him in 2008. We will be in the Okavango Delta for Buffalo and maybe lechewe and impala, and then will move down to the kalahari for more plainsgame. Mark's prices are not as high as the other Botswana outfitters but he offers a top notch hunt and has been around for a long time. This will be my fourth hunt with him. It's worth checking out, the delta is spectacular. TerryR
