robncoloradoOnly 350,000 Elephant in Africa According to CNN
Caught this article/video on CNN this morning. States that there are only 350,000 elephant left in Africa....... seems a bit off to me, doesn't surprise me as they report inaccurately quite regularly,
http://www.cnn.com/2017/06/29/...servation/index.htmlOF COURSE IT'S WRONG. IT'S CNN, aka FAKE NEWS.

LHeym500This raises a question. Can a species numbers become so crushed/small that as a hunter you would agree or even advocate removal from the bag?
I believe, do not have hard numbers, but a feeling based on what I have seen on this forum elephant have been nearly eradicated in TZ due to poaching. The hunting conservation model was overwhelmed. Sadly, the hunting conservation model in TZ was not able to prevent the eradication.
I have no problem with hunting elephants and understand macro level the value agruement. I dream of elephant myself.
Ultimately, I also understand just like with Bison on the plains we cannot have a modern 20th and 21th century society and standard of living and keep megs funia game destinies at pre 1900 levels.
But if elephant populations across their range or just locally are being eradicated maybe we need to not hunt them. If it is that bad every elephant matters.
I do not trust Zimbabwe's count. I do not know if CITIES uses Zim numbers to set quota, but if quota is based on Zim numbers then I will submit quota is too high.
On a smaller less controversial scale a lot of us lobbied to have foes removed from the shot list in my home county. KY has a lot of deer, but not here. Really, not in Eastern KY at all. This just applies to our rifle season, but I wanted it for all seasons. Why kill a doe when she has fawns in September? I lost the argument. That is ok.
I am not inflaming or trolling. I ask out of concern as a hunter conservationist.

What is the figure? One article said 350,000 and the other article -- I didn't see a number.

robncoloradoFrom the CNN Article:
Elephants in crisis
Elephant populations are plummeting across Africa.
A recent continent-wide survey showed catastrophic losses, with numbers dipping from 1.3 million in 1979 to around 350,000 -- far lower than expected.
30 June 2017, 01:52
Capt. PurvisI do not think those numbers are correct. Africa is a large place. No telling how many elephants there are in Northern Botswana alone. There needs to be accurate research in order to implement the proper science to manage the resource. Many liberals do not believe in sustainable hunting and can cook the books so to speak to achieve their agenda.

postoakDoes anyone know how many elephants are killed each year by sports hunters from industrialized countries and how many are cropped by government officials?
If 50,000 a year are being killed, then it seems likely that sports hunting kills are just a very tiny percentage of the total.

Barry GroulxWhat would the Communist News Network know about the natural history of elephants? They can do nothing without a hidden agenda.
30 June 2017, 13:01
Barry GroulxIn Zim the National Parks "ration" hunts are out of control. And figutes are coveted up. There are no culls at ptesent. But then so is everything else. Poaching is the issue and most journalists can't or won't distinguish it from hunting.

CumbrianI think the figures are very low, there is an estimated 44,000 elephants in Hwange national park alone, that would leave a mere 300,000 to inhabit a range which extends from the cape into Sudan, taking into account countries like Cameroon and most of west Africa has populations of elephant I think the figures are low.

Capt. PurvisA picture of a modern white hunter standing behind a dead elephant is the best way to spark hatred and emotions by organizations like PETA. Even Ringling Brothers stopped the circus this year due to their media power. It was not this bad before Cecil. Amazing that such a thing got that much attention. At the time of Christ it took 1,000 years for information to get around the known world. Today it takes 10 minutes. The media power of these organizations is what will put an end to the Big Five hunting in Africa.

CrazyhorseconsultingAt one time it was estimated there were 60 million Buffalo on the North American continent!

That is a fact that members from our already restricted hunting fraternity refuse to accept.

Time will tell and it will be sooner than not.

R. GunnIt seems strange that you get off on CNN's numbers without having any basis for your own WAG. I have no idea what the population is but I suspect their guess is as good as yours.

postoakOkay, I found the figure in Greg Brownlee's link. This was the result of "The Great Elephant Census" released on Sept 1, 2016., It gives a total of 352,000, with 27,000 killed in the previous year. This was for "savanna elephants" counted in only 93% of the savanna elephants range.

Perhaps if we post more "Hero Shots" on social media of dead Elephants and Lions, we stand a chance?
Or maybe more of a confrontational, in your face attitude?

CharlesLCNN is so difficult to browse, but I did not see where they included the disclaimers included in the National Geographic article. Does this number also include the 13K+ in Kruger Park.
