Phillip Smythe and I together in Charisa / Sept. 2011 He's using his .416 Rem Mag, and I am using my .577NE double. Phil had shot the bull in the right leg/shoulder just before the camera comes on, thus why the bull was bobbing so wildly up/down prior to my 1st shot. Click on below link to watch. This is my first shot! A big hole in his brain cavity, and he still stayed on his feet - wow!!! But, it did deter him from smashing Phil - we were both happy about that.

My gawd they soak up the lead. I figure around 4lbs. of it. Good work

And that would be the exit hole? Does appear you had him a bit punch drunk. Amazing the amount "get down and stay down" they can absorb while still looking for trouble. Congratulations, looks like you had a good time.

I've seen buffalo take some amazing damage and stay in the fight. But that takes the cake!!

Aaron, Tell the truth. Cliff tripped the buffalo, that is why it appeared to be stumbling when you shot it. You holding the lion back in the other video was just repaying the favor.

They sure have a way of getting your attention in a real big hurry, don't they? Glad nobody got run over.

Glad everything worked out for all involved. Just goes to prove all the bullshit of Taylors knockout value Aaron's shot probably went to the side, missing the spine. Who was that Africa PH who wrote one should wait until the buffalo lowers its head to toss you, then shoot it in the back of the head, and jump to the side

I cannot believe that a brain shot did not drop it DRT. I guess it broke the skull but went in at an angle & missed the main lobes???? I would really like an explanation on that one! You need to have that video clip encrypted and archived for your descendants for the next 100 generation! "When the wind stops....start rowing. When the wind starts, get the sail up quick."

I can't explain it either? You can see the bull react wildly to my first shot, but how exactly it did not knock him down - I have no idea? He was difficult to hit properly considering the bush, him coming, and the fact that he was bobbing his head up/down too - from Phil's shoulder shot just before the scene starts. Regardless, he was very tough - but fortunately it was just enough to change his mind.

Looks like the muzzle blast from Aaron's big gun just about took Phillip out of the fight!

It appears that he took the time to put his hat back on before firing the last shot!

I hunted with Phil right after you left. He showed me the skull and he was very glad that you had made that shot! Come to think of it, I am glad you made that shot, because Phil was still there to take me on an OUTSTANDING ele/buff adventure. P.S. He now carries a VC .500 double. Phillip is a fine PH, and an even finer young man! I only wish I could hunt with him more often. Yes I knew about the .500 double and I'm glad he's carrying one, it could be a wise investment someday.

Watching the PH flinch at the muzzle blast from behind him as your bullet passed a couple of feet to the left of his head reminds me that no one needing to shoot should ever be behind anyone else needing to shoot! But that can't always be avoided and you sure as hell made your shots count and did the right thing under the circumstances. Still shoulder to shoulder and not far apart whenever possible please! Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer.

Lots of things happened in this video that should not have happened. This was a REAL TO GOODNESS buffalo charge, where no one knows what was coming when it came, and everyone did exactly what they could do in those circumstances, and ultimately, any injury was avoided. And that is the results we all like to see. I have shot from behind my PH on a charging buffalo, and apologized afterwards for doing that. "That could not have been avoided, and in your place I would have done the same thing". Really puts all the silly Mark Sullivan antics in stark contrast ha??? Another silly notion some have has been exposed as a fallacy too - using a bigger gun. I can imagine the arguments some would have had, had AAron been using the lowly 375!

Saeed - Its always obvious to see your level of experience! Yes, we thought the bull was long gone from this location - had we any idea he was around we would have been doing things a bit differently. It matters little as to where I was in relation to the PH - as this video clearly shows, who the heck knows where he might come from. Michael Robinson above mentions we should ideally be shoulder to shoulder, and not that I am saying that's wrong Michael - but had we been so when this bull came from our immediate left - I would have been completely in Phil's line of initial shooting. Or, had my first shot dropped the bull - no second shot would have been necessary, nor would Phil have been remotely in the way of any shooting. Bottom line is this, you can make all the plans you want - but like Tyson once said, everyone has a plan until they get hit in the mouth. More important than a plan, is cool headed reaction when the plan goes out the window - as it did in this case. Stand your ground, and shoot the best you can. In this case, that's what we did. Was it perfect, nope - was it enough, just barely!!! I honestly think I would have dropped the bull initially had Phil not hit it just a second before my first shot, in the right shoulder. Breaking that shoulder added a wild up/down bobbing action to his charge which I missed the timing of by a hair. Had he just been coming, the shot would have been a bit easier to be honest. Regardless, nobody got hurt - and that's all that matters. I was glad Phil did not get hit, it could have ended badly had that happened. Bigger, doesn't always mean better - and my favorite rifle for buff will always be the .375 RUM. Basically the same as your favorite rifle Saeed. Frankly, had I been using my scoped rifle in the first place - this situation would have never happened! I love a double, and I think this video shows when a big double can be very useful. However, I think most (not all) of us should stick with a scoped rifle when hunting - and leave the doubles to the pros, when one is really needed. On the flip side, if I have to go after a wounded buff - the .577NE double is the gun I want in my hands.

Wet his pants probably Anyone who goes out of his way to create what looks like dangerous situations just to glorify himself has absolutely no respect from me! The individuals shown in this video, however, have my utmost respect.

Saeed, One can personally like MS or not for what ever reason, but I haven't seen anything to date, that suggests Sullivan hasn't got what it takes to deal with fast happening high pressure situations on DG. MS may not appeal to some hunters, but that no reason to unwarrantedly try and belittle him regards his nerve & rifle skills.

I am not sure that Mark Sullivan has ever had an honest to goodness buffalo charge in thick bush. Never seen one in his silly videos.

So you are insinuating MS is an incapable PH. thats a bit rough.

Everything I've seen of MS displays a complete lack of decorm for a human being much less a PH.

Agreed!! I think the above situation was handled as it should be, everyone was protecting each other and nobody was injured in the heat of the moment. I wouldn't want it any other way. Cheers.

Name of that video please. And I don't mean a buffalo lying in the open after a poor sod of a so called hunter - Mark Sullivan said it himself, that his clients are terrible shots so our hero can use his 600 Nitro Express and kill it to glorify himself
