DB I am quite happy to use a .45-70 as the back up...

Why do I not carry a rifle on the proficiency exam? Because I carry a revolver. It won't stop an elephant but it will stop a candidate running away And ele, buff, lion always stop at the first person they get to. I have a great deal of experience at NOT dying in nasty situations.

Clients on the otherhand... There are always more where they came from. I can always tell the forum/your widdow that a witchdoctor slapped a juju on you and you decided to donate your body to feed the starving hyaena's in the zambezi valley

I think somebody is being very brave spcifying me as the PH. Yes I have taken people out on handgun hunts for dangerous game and had a client shoot a buff this year with a Ruger No 1 in .45-70. Have taken people after both ele and buff with muzzel loaders. No Problems- just accept the limitations.

You are fairly warned, however, that being a pict by ethnic origin I have a fuse 2 nanometers long and people with more than the regulation ammount of rectum in their make up get treated like old computers - Information gets punched in.

I don't regard it as a "stunt" to use a .45-70 and there are many other (better) PH's who would take the winner of a raffel out - I am perfectly happy to do so, but I would think you also need to decide...

1) do you want a "coke and buns" safari or a bush camp in the valley?
2) Can you walk? Some areas require a high degree of fitness to be sucessful and others don't. For a man who cannot walk up hills and needs a 1st class bed there is nothing more misserable than hunting in an area where they are uncomfortable all night, tired alll day and are unlikely to shoot anything- I hunt because I enjoy it. A happy client is easy to enjoy a hunt with, but a misserable one - bugger that - especially when it could have been avoided by proper booking.

This is what made all the five years we hunted Chete were so great.

The camp was extremely comfortable, as all camps run by Rene Vincent that we have had the pleaseure of sharing with them.

The heat was bloody unbearable! Our beds were dripping wet with our own sweat in the morning, and if we manage ot get a couple fo hours sleep each night we were very lucky.

But, this did not stop us walking for hours each day chasing elephant, buffalo and all sorts of other game we had to follow. Sometimes we would walk for 8 to 13 hours a day!

And looked for ward to doing it again the next day.

But, because of previous clients not being able to walk after buffalo, we had between 10-12 buffalos to take care of, as we usually hunted at the end of the season.

To me Chete was the very best safari hunting area I've had the pleasure of hunting. And I think it would do great for this hunt too

There are some areas with very thick bush, which the buffalo love to get into for their midday siesta.

We used to get to about 10 yards from them. And even then we had a job finding a gap to shoot through.

In some instances, we had to scare them to jump up before shooting.

In this sort of case, I suggest a head or neck shot, as that seem to negate any idea the buffalo might have of charging

Provided the tickets are somewhat affordable, I'm in. I even have a .45-70 sitting in a gun cabinet somewhere. Now let me see, where did I put that rifle...

I would enter 45/70 or not. I know there was problems with first hunt that were explained. But I never did hear if the guy who won the double ever got his prize?

Gents,

There seems to be interest in this Buff Raffle. As to enough, we will have to see.

About the use of the 45/70 as originally posted, I think many of the folks here really don't object to the idea. If the PH is comfortable, than using it should finish what didn't happen on the Buff Hunt I.

If this moves any futher, we will need to have a booking company involved. Ganyana has suggested several he has dealt with. We are lucky here at AR, as we have several booking agents that are present at the site most of the time. Maybe they might be interested. Would also be nice if some of the fellows that handled the past raffles, be involved. The mamagement of the past raffles has been outstanding. It is a lot of extra work and at a voluntary basis, requires very generous individuals. All members and raffle management would be allowed to participate. The winning number plan used in the past, should be adopted. This guarantees the fairness for all entrants.

As to number of entries needed to buy this hunt, we first need to secure the total costing. If from past info, and current pricing of a 7 day hunt, ten thousand dollars might be a guessed at cost. If entries are priced at twenty dollars, than you do the math. As to special deals on buying groups of entries, it should be one entry, one price. This keeps all entries at an equal level.

Enough for now, as seeing the amount of interest to proceed is most important at this point.

Is this hunt a 2005 or 2006 hunt? What costs would be excluded (airfare, tips, etc.)? I would be interested depending on when the hunt is to take place, ticket cost and total cost.

Why not run a poll?

My reading here is most people do not mind, but PREFER NOT to have the requirement of a .45/70. Why not leave it up to the winner as an option.

If a .45/70 is a mandatory part it will have to funded in the raffle. I'd rather have more funds for more trophy fees than another bloody rifle which I would just re-sell. Maybe we could use a .577/.450 which is more African and effectively the same bloody thing.

Ganyana posted on what sort of safari people would like, ie options between a rough bush camp and a luxury safari camp.

I don't know if anyone has answered this yet, but my personal preference is either is fine. Except obviously the price for a rough bush camp must be reflected in the total price, maybe two persons could go! I don't mind sleeping in a swag under a mosquito net by a fire. Have done it in all sorts of places in Africa and without a fire.

But I imagine a luxury (ie standard) camp would sell more tickets.

Maybe others should comment as well to define what type of safari camp is desirable.

PS I would help out but am not based in the USA.

Nitrox,

A poll is fine by me. How about opening a thread, and polll the members. As to the type of camp, I'm sure most don't really care as long as they get a chance to hunt buff.

Have not received any posts as to someone handling the booking yet. This will be the guideline as to what will happen at the hunting camp. Me personally, anyway I can get there and chase a buff.

Interest is growing, but not as good as it should be. Don't want this to develop into the gun raffle fiasco. Rusty had to waste a lot of his time as well donating his monies for the return of entrants monies. I offered to help him in the return process, but he declined as the gentleman he is.

Again, if I should luck out and win, I will take my GG in 45/70, and DO THE Buff. I could take a Lott or a 375, but I'm up to the challange with the old war horse.

I'm in (again)

How about the winner has to use a cartridge older than he/she is? (Ray would be stuck with the sling/stone method )

Roughing it would be a hoot, but you might find me snuggled up with the Guide Gun in my bed if thing's go "bump" or "slither" or "Roar!" in the night.

Rog - Quit wittering, everybody prancing round in circles like girl guides on camp after some nasty bastard has put buffalo beans on the toilet paper.

Bring a .45-70 hadgun if you really want (just need to know by January of the year in which the hunt is to take place if the winner wants to use a handgun or a bow so we can apply for the special permit)

Just looking at prices, one can put a tuskless ele hunt together for 6k (no export though- not that on a tuskless there is any tusks to send home). If which ever booking agent is suckered- oops I mean volunteers to take on the taks - contacts me, I can pass on details.

500 grains... The last time you were against this, now you hold the same view. Why on earth do you participate? Just kindly excuse yourself, you won't find happiness in this raffle.
Please consider doing a different raffle, with rules that would please you and those that have simular views. Heck, you'd outsell this one by a long shot, I'd think.
The person with the most buff experience here is Saeed, and he don't have a problem with using a 45-70. Maybe you should try listening to him. He got "college".
Roger... I'd buy. ~~~Suluuq
