Plains Game Hunt Masai Land

All,
I was researching a plains game hunt for the Masai Land area of Tanz, I could not locate any strictly plains game hunts. As much as I would like to hunt DG in this area, I don't see this happening any time soon. As you know this area holds some special plains game that cannot be found elsewhere. A plains game hunt here tied in with Kilomanjaro and Ngorongoro Crater would be a wonderful trip. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Most of the game that resides there and cannot be found anywhere else can only be hunted on a full bag 21 day licsense. And I'm sure that there isn't anyone out there who'll pay that much for the full licsense and not take advantage of the DG that afforded to them on that type of hunt!

That said, I believe you can hunt Tommies and maybe Grants on a 10 and 14 day licsense up towards Masai. I know you cannot hunt Gerenuk and lesser kudu without the 21 day full bag licsense. You could hunt zebra, Lich. Heartebeast, and Nyassa wildebeast down south in the Selous area on a 10 day'er.

BigBullet,

A plains game hunt for the unique east African species is possible but it is quite expensive. Because of the Tanzanian licensing system most of the special species are on a 21 day license as are lions. So it basically costs the safari company as much to allow you to hunt a lesser kudu as it does a lion. Other countries do not have this particular licensing system so it is much easier for them to sell a plains game only safari.

If you are still interested contact me and I'll do a quote for you.

Whilst you'll get a variety of offers, the nitty gritty is that it's mainly dependent on what species are available on what licence. If you want the largest number of PG species, you're gonna have to pay for a longer licence, and whilst you'll probably get a bit of a discount, don't expect it to be a helluva lot.

If there's one thing the TZ GD/Gvt are good at, it's taking their pound of flesh......

Easy fix.

Take a buddy to shoot the DG and you shoot the speciality PG. Most operators in Tanz have the shared license option where the hunter and the "observer" share the game on the 21 day license. Announce that you have a lion, leopard, and three buffalo on license and wait to see how many friends you have.

P.S. I'm generally available when excess dangerous game is available. It's good work when you can find it.

Luke Samaras made me a good offer for plainsagame only this year on a 21-day license. It was a 10-day hunt, reduced day rate, with the government fees for a 21-day hunt. So, he will do it with some of his extra quota for PG.

There are others who will do it as well.

Yes, it is expensive, about half the cost of a normal 21-day hunt. But, it can be done in a few areas with excellent success on the big ones (Lesser Kudu, Oryx, Gerenuk, Grants, Tommies).

somehow I just can't see spending $15,000-20,000 for a 5 species, 10 day plains game hunt. i guess it's different strokes for different folks, however, and more power to those with money to burn.

You'll want to be up on the current trophy fees too. Gere's alone can run $3K.

Gentlemen,
Thank you so much for your responses, now I see why...I shall have to save my shekals for a few more years and tie it with a DG hunt.

I too have always wanted one or two East African Impala, a Tommy and a couple Grants Gazelle.
I wonder if hunts for these not so exclusive PG are available?

The species you mention are all on a 10 day licence but even a 10 day licence isn't cheap.

Tommy isn't on a ten day TZ license, or, at least, it didn't show up on mine.

I had white bearded wildebeest, zebra, Coke's hartebeest, impala, Grant's and warthog. We never saw a shootable hog or any wildebeest at all. The absence of game was due to the intense drought. This will change if the rains get back to normal.

I was told bushpig and baboon were on license, but mine didn't show them.

Fred,

Tommy & Grant's are usually both on a 10 day licence.

As others have said, the best stuff in Tanzania, including the best plains game in Maasailand, can be hunted only on a 21 day license.

C'est la vie.

Ethiopia,
Even with the increase in trophy fee's. It may be immensely less to hunt these on a shorter safari in the desert Ethiopian hunts. Most of the Masai species are in Ethiopia.

I thought so, too, Steve, but the tommy wasn't there. Maybe they'd blown their quota?
