What about the danger of collecting Malaria beginning of October at Zimbabwe's Malapati and Sengwe? That area is close to Kruger National Park, there you don't need to take Malaria prevention (medication) - at least that's what the doctors at Skukuza (Kruger Park's HQ)had told me. I visited them with a person who had a terrible rash on his upper body. The doctor said that's from Malaria medication - which isn't necessary when visiting Kruger. Suitable long clothing and sprays etc would be sufficient.

Whenever I go to Kruger I will take a pyrethrins spray along = zero mosquitos in the room. But I'm just not sure about the south-eastern part of Zimbabwe. Beginning of October normally it's dry and hot anyway which means not many mozzies around.

Why risk it?
You only need one.

I don't want to take medication if I can avoid it. Living in Africa since 35 years, always careful, never caught anything. With an allergy like described I couldn't hunt. That poor chap scratched his body nonstop.

I hunt the Kruger area quite a bit and ALWAYS take malaria meds there.

The locals I hunt with say it's a must.

The one thing for certain sure about malaria is that you don't want to get it.

A lot of the meds do have side-affects, but I take a local product, Deltaprim (pyrimethamine and dapsone), once weekly. No ill effects at all. In areas such as Kanyemba, where there can be virulent strains, I may combine the Deltaprim with a daily dose of Paludrine (proguanil hydrochloride) (as per doctor's advice). I have gotten cold sores on this cocktail, but they are preferable to malaria, which I have also had!

use insect repellents liberally, wear long clothing at night, and sleep under netting.

Yep, like ijl says, avoiding being bitten is the key. Permitherin (sp)soaking your clothing, including what you will wear in camp after hunting day, DEET repellent and mossie nets are the way to go.

I have taken Malarone with no obvious side effects, but they are expensive if you are in country for a while.
Not sure how good Doxy is now days, but will help counter tick bite fever.

If you talk to locals they will tell of some very tragic and sad events with malaria, just don't risk it.

Cheers
Stu

Why not consider Doxy, which will also take care of any tick issues at same time? Take in evening so any sun sensitivity issues are minimized.

Doxy needed long after leaving area. Usual AB side effects... like upset stomach after so long for many.

Certainly several options. No real reason not to do it if you are an infrequent visitor.

Malarone if i take a preventive BUT Doxi has the extra benefit of redicing your chance if contracting Tick bite fever which is highly possible down there, particularly if cattle are present.
Generally not many Mosquitos at that time of the year so you could take preventative measures during twilight and night such as covering up.

True. Had it happen. You can also have sun sensitivity.

Why are you trying to reinvent the wheel? I don't understand someone spending a pile of cash to hunt and then splitting pennies over their malaria meds. Take your Malarone and go hunting.

Do what I did. Try the Malaria meds at home before you go. Keep trying till you find one that works for you. Then go hunting.

Due to heavy rains, the Eastern Cape had mosquito's for the first time in my visits there. Small little bastards, just like the ones that carry West Nile virus here in the States. Permanone spray is great for Tick's but what about those suckers that bite you on your skin? I take Lariam anytime I'm north of Jo'burg and have no ill effects. You DO NOT want Malaria.

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."

Arniet maybe has the best advice. I use Doxy because the other have some serious side effects for me. Try them at home.
