Will be in Windhoek in two weeks for two days before going out on safari. Are there any stores within the town that are must sees? I would like to buy a few items (belt, boots, hat, shirt) to take back with me. Recommendations from anyone? Oh, and possibly the part of town I should look in?

Roger Coomber can tell you the name, but he took me to a nice set of shops and one had Courtney boots. I will be stopping there sometime this summer to pick up another pair...They had all the items on your list.

Safariland Holtz in the Wecke & Voights centre is the place to go for safari clothing. Ahrens Gunshop is also a very nice shop, though a little busy most of the times. Ask Sven, the owner, to see his trophy collection upstairs.

+1

Holtz has the best range of clothing by far in Windhoek.

Sven Ahrends is a good guy, a prominent shotgunner in Namibia.

As for gunshops, I visited threee, perhaps the local Namibians can fill in the blanks, but

One was about 6-8 blocks away from the Kalahari Sands, pretty basic shop.

Second was more of a store front, one of several shops in a little mall, not very large.

The third was out by the Country Club I recall, sort of in an industrial park, and it was nice, with lots of interesting rifles and an small, one lane indoor range where I fired a Blaser 95 in 375 H&H- a good place to visit. They gave me a tour of their shop, front and back...

404, the shops you visited where (in above order):
Rosenthal's
The Gunshop
Ahrens Gunshop (by far the best)

Gentlemen,
Thank you for the information. I definitely will be looking into these.
Unfortunately, after the safari, I have to return to Iraq for the last seven months on my contract. Ah well.

Have a great time in Namibia, I know you will. Does this mean you will make Dallas?

Cheers

There is a mall downtown that has some great shops. It has an open air market where locals sell some crafts across the street.

also, I can remember the name, but there is a great barbecue spot.... anyone help me here?

I definitely will try to make Dallas this year. Only problem is if they offer me scandalous amounts of money to stay a couple of months longer in Iraq. That would allow me to go back in 2011 after cape buffalo with my .395 Max with Macifej's bullets! Now watch someone who doesn't read the big bore forum say, "Don't you mean the .375 Ruger?"

Steve, yes, I will be up north but not while you are here. My matric reunion is actually that weekend when you arrive, down in the South of the country (Keetmanshoop). (It was supposed to be last year to make it 20 years, but we had a few lax orginisers so now its 21 years...)

I will be hunting around Windhoek round -about the time when you fly back, so give me a call on my cell number, and we can go and make the people from Joe's richer! (cell no. sent by PM)

Hey Tim, yes they are nice boots thumb

The shop that Tim's referring to is in the same complex as the Kalahari Sands hotel in the centre of town; Holtz.

Assuming you are going to walk around then the Kalahari Sands (Gustav Voigts centre) is a good to place to start for the boots, clothes etc. and then just walk up the main road there is some good souvenir and gem shops, crafts and jewellery places.

The Namibia craft market next to the Warehouse theatre sell Namibian made crafts and World of Gems (197 Mandume Ndemufayo Avenue)is on your way to Ahrens Gun Shop.

All the best
Roger

As you face the Kalahari Sands arcade, go right past Veck and Voights (sp?) a few steps just past the bank is Katerina Karl run by Eva Marie and Heino Mannschen. There you will find some extremely high end designer items in various leathers, including game, for your Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Not cheap but absolutely best quality.

Regards, Tim
