The following is a note that I received this morning from Buzz Charlton. Again, to me the key is to stay in communication with someone that you know, trust and respect and rely on information from them as opposed to media reports, rumors and speculation.

quote:
Thanks so much for the emails and thinking of us. All good here in sunny Zimbabwe! We are a little anxious to find out the official results which are been stalled for no other reason other then the fact that the result did not go the way that our illustrious leader thought they would!

As we speak now though things are very quite and there is no trouble in Harare or on the roads. I have traveled right through the country as I have had hunts in Vic falls, Nyamuswa and Dande. Myles and Rex have driven to Chewore and Alan has just arrived from Bulawayo enroute to Omay with his client and non of us have had any problems on the roads at all. Steph, my girlfriend, works out at the Airport and to get there has to drive through the high density areas in the morning and returns every evening and is, as a single young white girl, absolutely fine and is certainly not worried in the slightest.

We have taken the precaution of contacting relevant embassies and telling them that we have their nationals hunting with us and with out exception all Embassies say they do not expect violence but that they do have contingency plans for their nationals should there be. Myself, Alan ,Rex and Myles all have mobile radios and Sat phones and are in contact with the office daily so are up to date with day to day developments.

Kirsty has done a wonderful job sourcing all the food which seems a little easier than last year. As we speak I am very positive on the situation in Zim and expect that we will be back enroute to what was remembered as the "Jewel of African Hunting". Of course, if there is any change in the situation here rest assured that we will be the first to let you know as your safety and the enjoyment of your safari are our top priorities.

Cheers for now Buzz

I think prudence not panic should be the watchword.

For me, that means considering taking a sat phone along when in the past I would not, staying in close contact with my PH to get accurate and timely assessments of what the situation is like, making sure I am registered with the embassy in Harare and being vigilant about not taking photographs or engaging in conversations that could be deemed to be problematic.

I continue to be amazed at some of the alarmist commentary that seems to be completely detached from the reality of what the folks on the ground in country are experiencing. The situation dictates prudence not panic.

I got this reply from Danny Friend with Nengasha Safaris this morning. I'm not hunting with Danny's company, but met him in Dallas and thought it a good idea to check in with him.

Hello David,

Good to hear from you and thankyou so much for the concern showed, we
are
all a bit anxious at the moment waiting for the results of the
elections but
we are fine thanks, there is no violence at all so far, I do also
believe
the media spices the stories up a bit as I am getting similar emails
from
our friends elswewhere in the world.

I look forward to seeing you again next year in Dallas, and will keep
you
posted with events and hunting throughout the year.

My best regards

Danny Friend

NENGASHA SAFARIS

Seems to echo the feelings of most of the Zim outfitters we're hearing from. Business as usual with a little bit of being anxious. Gotta love the tenacity of these guys.

Same here. I received word from the West Nicholson area this morning: no problems. Hunting continues and appears to be a great year for it.

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."

Speaking of good years for hunting, I keep hearing how good the rains were this year. Up around Lake Kariba, I was told it was the best rains in a decade...not sure how evenly that was distributed but I hear good things in Namibia also.

we just returned from the Doma area, Zim, after an unsucessful elephant hunt due mainly to the late rains which limited visibility as well as keeping the animals in the national parks area and away from the crops, We had no problems, in country, of any nature

The latest on the news from the internet this AM is that Mbeki says all is normal and it isn't a crisis. Of course, this is after he met with comrade Bob. Makes me wonder.

This is truly amazing.
