I've read posts from a few years back that described Hornady's proprietary .375 Ruger DGS loads as performing poorly, even on large plainsgame (eg-fragmentation, shallow penetration)...At least one poster suggested a (large) "bad batch" or quality control issues early on... Anyone RECENTLY used this ammo in Africa?? Outcomes??

There has been no comments lately. I have used there solids without problems. But I personally prefer TSX 300grs on buff. Tears them up. Mike

Makes no sense to me to spend a lot of money and time on a hunt and just to skimp on bullets. I would use a flat point monolithic design. I would recommend the terminal preformance thread in the big bore section if you have not read it that was started by michael458

My issue is that I'm not a reloader (and don't want to become one) but I'm limited to the .375 Ruger b/c I'm having a BLR rebarelled & the .375 H&H is too long...

You don't have to be a reloader to have any choice of premium bullets you want. There are several custom ammo loader like Superior and others who others I am sure will list as well.

I've used DGS bullets in .458 Win Mag (elephant and buffalo), .416 Ruger (elephant), .450 N.E (elephant).404 Jeffery (elephant) and .375 Ruger (buffalo) with excellent results. Hornady, for a while, made some monolithic solids that did turn out to be too brittle, but the ones marketed now seem to be quite good, at least, IMHO. Joe, For clarification, do you mean DGS which is their solid or did you intend to ask about the DGX which is their expanding bullet? The fragmentation comment got my attention as it is something you do not normally hear when discussing solid bullets. My experience is the new DGS solids are actually quite good. You are correct, the posts were regarding non-solid Hornady DGX

I can't speak to the .375 Ruger (but will be able to after September) but I have used the .404 Jeffrey Hornady DGX bullets on a couple of buff and have had quite good results. I have only recovered two bullets and they showed the expansion Ruger highlights in their advertisments... about 1.25x expansion. Their old Interbond bullet did not have a good reputation but I think the "new" DGX is a huge improvement on those bullets. I spoke to Ivan Carter about the bullets a couple of years ago and he and probably Dave Fulson have seen more buff shot with the DGX than most and gave them a "thumbs up" rating. Now before the Internet police says "yes but they are his sponsor", we communicated outside any forums and I asked him his honest opinions and he listed other bullets he liked as well. But he did not hesitate when I specifically asked about these... and that was good enough for me. And the bullets have been good enough for me as well. Jorge: When you are following an elephant and a buffalo decides to kill you, you shoot him with what you have in the magazine. Hunting buffalo, of course, is a different proposition and I'd not hesitate to use Hornady DSX bullets if I had them available.

My PH used solids only on Buff. Of course he expected that any shot that he was going to make would be either going away or coming toward us. joester, I too have a .375 Ruger and have only used the Hornady DGX on paper. However, I'm going to the CEB's for dangerous game in both their solids and non-con's. As mentioned, read michael458's thread in the Big Bore forum and see why many of us are going in that direction. As you are not a reloader, there are several options if you do not have a friend to reload for you. However, if you have no other option, then see how your rifle shoots the DGX's. If they shoot accurately, I wouldn't have any issue with using them. Shot placement will have a lot to do with success.
