We were are Rietvlei Nature reserve this morning again for some animal viewing for my son. When we came upon this grooup of rhino 7 + 1, + 1 being a small new born white rhino. I'm not an rhino expert but 3 weeks ago when we were there there wasn't a small one so I assume the calf is 3 weeks old.

Anyway one of the younger bulls maybe her own offspring got to close to the calf and I was lucky to capture this set of photos.

We spent another 10 minutes or so viewing them and none of the other rhinos dared to get close to the calf again.

I always try to use enough gun but then sometimes a brainshot works just as good.

While we are approaching winter here, you are watching new babies there. Cycle of life and all that.

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."

yukon delta,

Even if our winter is not finished yet this is not calving time yet. Most of the larger mammals like rhino, ele and hippo can have calves right trough the year but the peak is usually in summer.

Not everyday you get to see such a young rhino also interesting is that the white rhino lets the calve run in front of her when they run away and the black rhino have the calve running at her back. I suppose it has to do with where the live the black rhino in very thick bush and the mother has to open a path and the white in more open areas where she would like to keep an eye on where her calve is runing to.
