I haven't taken nearly as many kinds of antelope as some of our forum members. Of the ones that I have successfully taken, the sharpest horn award goes to my Gray Bush Duiker. The second sharpest horns sprout from the head of my Limpopo Bushbuck. I find it interesting that the two smallest species of antelope I've taken also boast the sharpest horns. I thought it would be interesting to see what two species wear the sharpest and next sharpest horns in our members experience. I wonder if there is a trend for increased sharpness based on smaller specie size. | ||

The steinbok has the sharpest horns in my collection. Klipsringer is a close 2nd and the common bush duiker comes in 3rd. My steinbok's horns are sharp enough to "prick" your skin in you rub them at the right angle. The horns of the oryx, particularly the more slender ones of the females, come to almost a pin point over their three+ feet of length. Although horn shaft itself is rounded and has no sharp edge, they can effectively penetrate the bodies of adversaries. If you've missed the photo of an oryx with a rival's broken-off horn penetrating its neck, then you need to look that one up. | |||

Most all of the pygmy antelope will have very sharp horns, especally the young and middle age rams. I have several African friends who didn't respect the little guys enough growing up. They have the scars to remind them. Some young Springbok & Impala's can have sharp horns as well as those mentioned already. Best respect all of them but especially the wounded Oryx and Bushbuck. Had a guest once who had an Arabian Oryx horn penetrate him just above the knee at the back of the thigh. It travelled all the way up and impacted the pelvis at the back of his buttock. Not the sharpest, but by far the deadliest. The man lived. As per his account he did not even realise what had happened until he felt the blood running down the leg. I darted the animal and measured the blood on the horn at over 40cm. Now that is quite some penetration | |||

The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt. Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. Like others I had to walk over to the collection of Pygmy and the two smallest had the sharpest horns. Blue Duiker and Damaraland Dik-Dik neither would concern me about getting gored as they don't reach the lenght of their ears. The one that would concern me the most would be the Bushbuck espcially the "middle aged" ones. The older ones are worn round. | |||
