Anybody seen one of the new Mod 598 or 599? Just visited Davidsons web site and they don't list them. Looks interesting what with the Mod 70's demise. Hope they are half as good as the old New Haven weapons.

You mean the Model 798 and Model 799

From what I have gathered about this is Remington bought out Interarms a few years ago, they are using the Intertarms Mauser action on them. I talked with Boyer's Guns in PA he is getting one in later this year, I need to go look at a Model 799 in a .223 And they are putting a satin finish on the stocks, no high gloss!!! About time!!!

The Model 599 is a Auto-load

Remington has them on their web site

Excluding stocks look at any Mauser 98 whatever name brand it has been sold under and you're looking at the same rifle.

Pancho,

I looked at a M798 and a M799 (Mini) in the Remington booth at The Shot Show in Fedruary. I also interviewed a gent from Zastava, who makes these rifles.

Previously Charles Daly imported these Zastava Mausers, and before that Interarms, and before that...well, they have been brought here in a variety of guises. Think of them as Interarms Mark X in design. Remington has a multi-year deal, so expect to see them around as the import pipeline gets filled.

The Remington/Zastava rifles I examined were set in laminated stocks, and reeked of cosmoline. That odor took me back a few years!

The rifles were smooth-barelled (no sights), and drilled and tapped for scope mounts. The actions were typical commercial Mauser, no square bridges or other fancies added.

If we look closely at Remington's website we see that in fact the .375 and .458 does come with iron sights.

That said, there's so much bull on their website about these guns that one must be careful about believing any of it...however it does say they come with sights.

Jim, there is no such thing as an Interarms Mark-X design! The Mark-X action is a Zestava action, and is aduplicate of the FN Mauser action, and in fact are made on the origenal machines bought from FN, in what was, at the time Yugoslavia. Interarms was nothing but an importer, and never designed anything.

In any event the new 798, and 799 rifles will be a great improvement over the Rem 700 rifle. Many companies have bought these actions for their rifle line. The most noted one was Whitworth of Mannchester, England. Interarms also imported the Whitworth rifles into the USA, along with their Alaska line, which was a cheaper, less finished rifle, made by Zestava, and I assume will closely resemble the new 798 rifles, with Remington's name on them.

This is a great improvement if only that the action is a CRF action! This is a step in the right dirrection, at least, where rifles made as DGRs are concerned! beer

I handled them at the RMEF national convention. In my opinion they handled like crap and if I could only buy one of those to rifle hunt. Well I would take up bow hunting. The action felt like sand paper was being grated togther. The fit/finish wasn't great and as said above the gun didn't smell that great. I wouldn't give you $150 for one let alone the 5 or 6 hundred they are asking for one.

Buy the time you invest the money in doing a trigger job, bedding, lapping the action and getting the thing in good condition you could but a used Empire or a Hein, or even a MODEL 70 in there jacked up price condition.

When I looked at the 2006 Remington catalog several weeks ago, the picture of the bolt face for the 798 rifle showed a recessed bolt face and a Sako-type extractor. I mean ,really, is nothing sacred anymore? I could not believe what I was seeing, anyone else see this? I guess we will just have to wait and see what they look like. Later,Russ.

The original "Mini-Mauser" by Zasatva had the recessed bolt fdace and SAKO extractor all along. It was never a a true mini Mauser.

The standard and magnum actions should be identical to FNs as MacD37 said.

I gotta admit, I never liked the MarkX action either. Always felt rought. The Santa Barbara (used in Parker Hales) always felt smoother to me.
