I wanted to post a few more of Marks’s lions for the enjoyment of all. I just posted those that were taken during last season and the beginning of this season. Feel free to make comments good or bad, and judge or subjectively guess each lion's age if you wish. I hope it will be enjoyable and not too controversial. The clients, however, wish to remain anonymous. Does it really get any better than hunting with Mark? The man deserves admiration from hunters and fellow PHs alike. I don't know of any other PH who produces quality trophies like this (not including fenced pens in SA, of course). My hat is off to you, Mark. Cal PS. Some very nice lions to be sure! I was hoping we could get the experts and novices both involved by getting those interested to make some general age estimations too! If not, I am glad to see people are simply enjoying the great photos. I did not contact Mark for his age estimates so this thread can simply be about what others think. Fantastic Lions, I am no expert and do not want to get my head chopped off, these photos do not give you much to work off as far as aging, but I will give my first off feelings, I will not give reasons for my ageing as this is always where the controversy comes in, these are my honest Gut feelings, #1 6/7 years of age #2 6/7 years of age #3 5/6 years of age #4 5/6 years of age #5 6/7 years of age All great Lions, and I am sure all happy clients, Regards JK

I am actually sitting here at a table with Dr Colleen Begg in Niassa. She just aged my lion in the 7-9 year old category. They have under 4 years, 4-6 years and 7-9 years categories. She told me she or she thought no one on earth could tell someone an exact year on a lion's age even after critiquing the skull (not to mention alive and in the field). She said no way could she tell someone if a lion was 10 years old, or 12 years old. So this is obviously very in exact. She did say that they have aged over 60 hunted lions, and if the nose is 50% black or more, 100% of the lions they aged were over 6 years old. She said they have not had one single anomaly. That may be specific to Niassa...Just passing on what I thought was some interesting stuff from one of the world's foremost lion experts. Hi Tim Agree with you, all I did here was what the Author of the Topic asked for, I did not give any exact or say I was expert, just my gut feeling as a Hunter looking at the Photos, not been able to see any of the other body characteristics to be able to age, But I would say I am pretty close at least within a few years,

Tim that is really interesting information. Lane had previously identified Dr. Begg as someone that guides the LCTF opinion. Perhaps some of the other two LCTF experts (Dr. Packer & Dr. White) could comment on that aspect in correlation to their research findings as well. It is interesting and perhaps important to lion hunters when applied with other viewable characteristics as out in the field it is not possible to evaluate the skull and teeth beforehand if you follow my thinking. If Dr. Begg is interested in applying a guess to the ages of any of the photos using that criteria, and with our understanding that she is simply providing a guess based on limited known information (so others don't put her on the spot), I think it would be interesting! Fantastic cats, they all certainly look mature, No 3 looks a tad younger than the other ones but he doesn't look very young, i would dare to believe no 4 is the oldest or at least the one that had the toughest life, anyway wonderful animals!

Guess I wasted money on that aging lion book! It said they were all younger than MS.
|

Of course they are younger than MS. He has to be about 60 years old by now... But seriously, where did MS say how old these lions were supposed to be? Jason "You're not hard-core, unless you live hard-core." _______________________ Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt. Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure. -Jason Brown

Jason: Seeing MS declared the lion to be 12 years old in the first photo posted it would be fair to assume (using this photo a "template") that these others, whose ages were not disclosed, must be ranging between 10 - 25 years P.S. All super trophies regardless of age! Good on the hunter and MS.

I noticed that Lane had linked the Mark Sullivan Lion (1 picture) thread back to his thread on the African Lions Hunting Management and Ecology Forum. I just thought I would also link this thread, Mark Sullivan Lions (10 pictures) back to the African Lions Hunting Management and Ecology Forum (Recent Lion Taken with/by Sullivan) so they are tied together. Were these the only lions taken by MS in this period? Pretty good work! I tell you what would be really informative, once the TZ Wildlife Dpt issues the aging results for them, to have these posted here. "...Them, they were Giants!" J.A. I have reasons to believe that in spite of a number of "old" lions being taken last year, none went over 6 With that said the TZ lion appears older to the eye than what he is in the tooth.

I like all the little digs that are being thrown in on Mark Sullivan's lion age estimates... When it comes to Mark Sullivan, haters are gonna hate, with any excuse they are given. His ageing may be off, but you if look at the Lion pics posted here, the ones on his website, the pictures in his books, and you have to give credit where credit is due... He has no reason to be ashamed of any of the lion trophy's he has gotten for his clients. . "The envious are not satisfied with equality; they secretly yearn for superiority and revenge."

Hi Shawn, Nice cat. Were these images taken just before he was shot? It looks like he is staring intently at something, possibly the blind? Am I correct in saying this was in Moyowosi?
