All I can say is that Dar was one of the nicest and safest african citys we spent time in. Ok, a corrupt cop tried to give me a fine for supposedly running a red light, but after having dealt with truely massive amounts of aggressive corruption with threats of violence in north africa, he didn't stand a chance with us, and ended up with nothing. This would never have happened with a tourist who wasn't driving around himself anyway, so there's no problem for you there.

Dar felt like a safe city to walk around in (within reason, as in all citys), the fish market (next to the ferry that goes across the bay to the Kigamboni side) was one of the best we have seen, with VERY fresh seafood (good to know if you ever need to cook for yourself while in Dar!), and the Indian ocean water was incredably warm. We spent several afternoons floating around for hours just south of the city on the Kigamboni side, after sorting out things in the city center during the day. Out of the 21 african countrys we've been to, Tanzania had some of the friendliest and most helpfull people, and I look forward to returning.

My only regret is that we weren't aware of Bwanamich and his icecream business while we were there! My wife would have killed for some good icecream at the time, after half a year on the road through countries with dubious dairy products...

Surestrike,
Thats not a problem I have done it several times, just wait until the sun comes up and shoot yourself, that and time is the only cure I know for flyintg with a hangover, the other option is don't sober up until you get into camp, that has worked well in the past...

but alas age has crept up on me, and my brains have settled (lord knows where) and I no longer have the nerve for such endeavors as I can remember those old days too vividly, it's like a nightmare...

Talking about ice cream that was a treat Dar es Salaam had for us. First time we had a luxury food at about the only ice creamery in East Africa after several weeks on the road.

bwanamich

Did you have a retail outlet back in 1989 in Dar ?

Sorry Nitrox,
That was not ours. I only came to Dar in '93. My mother started the ice-cream shop sort of to keep her busy. When she got fed up she "left" it to my wife and I. Now my wife is running it. Its the real thing too....My mother comes from the most famous ice-cream region in Italy (My other half is French although I was born and grew up in Kenya). Next time you are in these neck of the woods come and try...
