There is no good reason the 8mm is so neglected, other than ignorance, and the fact that few people hunt with it! I am one who does, and I have a supply of 220 gr nicol jacketed solids, but they are for the .318 dia for my 8X57JR double, and a 16Ga/8X57JR cape gun. I'm not sure where one might find solids for the 8X57 Mauser (.323)round, but the 8mm Rem mag would have need of such a bullet, though I haven't heard a word about that cartridge in yrs. Maybe Remington has solids in their line up.

The 8mm has always been treated like a bastard child by Americans, as a sort of low powered cartridge. This is because American ammo makers habitually loaded ammo for the 8X57 Mauser very low, because of the many different 8mm cartridges chambered in surplus rifles brought into this country, after WWII. So, most people had those rifles re-barreled to 30-06, or the wildcatters re-chambered for 8MM-06.

The 8X57 Mauser is a very good cartridge, if loaded properly, and will do absolutely anything the 30-06 will. Yes, the 8mms are very neglected, but that is good for me, because I can still buy some very nice rifles, chambered for 8mm at very reasonable prices, because of it's lack of popularity here. thumb

It's all based on what sells. Common US calibers in America are on everyone's shelf. Pick anything a little off to the side, and you'll play hell getting it. Federal just dropped their premium load for my .280 pushing a 160 grain Nosler Accubond. I emailed them to complain but again, it all boils down to what sells. If it "ain't" a .270, 30-06, 7mm or .300 win mag, it won't get serious attention. Same for my .308 Norma Mag...no respect! I guess I should bite the bullet and start reloading. lefty
Good luck with your quest,

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."

yes,

My guess is that there just isn't much of a market for them among Continental hunters.

What solids can you get there in Sweden? Is handloading legal?

When are you going to Africa? What will you be hunting for that requires heavy .323" solids?

hi
oh yes handlaoding is legal here in sewden and there are plenty of good bullets to buy here(much more expensive than in USA Frowner) . i just wanted to run a test on different solid bullets. i own both 8x57 husky and 6,5x55 husky too and of cours a ruger in 3006. the variety of bullet and loading in 3006 is just amazing. i have 220 grain fmj solid woodleigh for my 06 and can find old 156 grain solid in 6,5(like those bell used for those elephants Big Grin) but slection in 8 mm is really poor compared to 3006 Frowner. in sewden there are plenty of old husky mausers in 8x57 around. very well made guns and very good round which can do every thing a 3006 can do with right bullet and right loading.
