Rick,
Define proper? Do you require a 338 to shoot groundhogs?

A proper rifle/chambering is one with the power to take down your quarry, one that you can SHOOT well, and has proven to be reliable.

Everyone has their own opinions. I certainly have mine.
I personally prefer the longer 26 inch barrelled CB lever action over the guide gun.
But either one with a properly constructed round and proper shot placement will do the deed on anything in Africa.
Hell a 44 magnum will as well.

Yes, physics and terminal ballistic performance simply seem to evaporate when the 45-70 is discussed.

The 45-70, a magical caliber.

If you don't respect the opinions of those who have hunted Cape buffalo, why are you asking for them?

It seems to me that if you truly believe that your chosen rifle/bullet are adequate, you would just go ahead and do your hunt, rather than trying to convince others of the wisdom of your choice.

George,

The point of contention is I am not asking for advice.

I am simply making conversation with those forum readers and there are plenty of em out there (as can be seen by the volume of views) on the topic of the 45-70 and it's uses on D/G.

Different people have different thoughts and experiences. Forums are a place to share those experiences. By the way I am not trying to convince anyone of anything. All people should use what they feel is best for them.

I highly doubt the TROLLS are going to be convinced to use a Marlin 45-70 over there $5000 dollar Foreign rifle that they dipped into the kids college fund to buy! hahaha.

George, I suggest you put Carmelo on your ignore list, as most of us have done. Replying to him justs keeps him around. He's just a troll who's more full of $hit than a hundred year old longdrop outhouse...

George - His proposed hunt has taken on a life of its own. First he was hunting buff in Namibia, then its RSA, now its a 10 day hunt including RSA buff and plains game in Namibia, but he wont tell you where he is hunting, who he is hunting with, how much the hunt costs, how he is getting there, doesnt know what a 4457 or SAPS 311 form is, cant tell you how he was able to book a 10 day dangerous game hunt in RSA and hunt in Namibia at the same time, and knows nothing about the regulations regarding dangerous game hunting.

He claims to have copious amounts of experience reloading and shooting a 45-70, but he posts that he just purchased his first 45-70 a few months ago. He wont post any pictures, but promises to disclose everything upon his return...

The discussions on AR have improved. I don't read them all including the 45-70 one.

Good points have been made on how the internet makes many of us feel anonomous. Most of us are learning to deal with it and not get so mad we can't come back for our hat.

Savage,
Well said.
I don't understand why anyone would get mad about a post they claim to have no interest in anyway.

Why do people who could care less about a 45-70 get so heated over it????
Strange phenomenon isn't it?

Carmelo,

Perhaps the writing of Eric Bern who wrote books like "The Games People Play" explains that we all need attention of some amount. Some have the skills to do something good and get attention. Others with less ablilty do things that are bad and get the required attention.

I agree completely.
If we could get the TROLLS to back off and let a guy post a lousy thread on the 45-70 for African Game without being attacked every 5 freaking seconds we all wouldn't have to be dealing with this now would we?
