I like the show SCI puts on in Reno. Made all the reservations today. Even staying through Friday to meet for the traditional Friday afternoon get together at the Giraffe Bar. Wife likes comedy so we'll be at the Wed night show, none of the others interest us this year. Sorry we had the miss GW lastyear, oh well. Hope to see many of you there!!

ps, the last time we were there the wife bought me a nice Francotti Mauser in 10.75x68. Took a nice Waterbuck with it in October. I really hope the comedy show is good this year. Happy wife = nice guns.

Only problem with Reno, is that it is COLD in January. Nearly every year I went it snowed. I think SCI is in LV next year, and I plan to be there. LV is a lot warmer in January, and there is a lot more to do, and there is a lot more hotels and casinos to choose from; also there are a lot more flights from Texas and you don't have to change planes. Don't mean to put Reno down, I do like the town in the summer, and I know it is easy to get to from California. Wink

Snow doesn't bother me too much. Live in LA and it's a nice change. Stay at the Atantis, walk over the sky bridge to the convention center. Take taxis to any of the shows. My beer is usually colder than I am.

Vegas is certainly easier to get to from here, but a day of skiing at Tahoe makes the effort of getting to Reno worth it. Dallas, on the other hand, is a two hour flight from the Florida panhandle Smiler

I like Reno and Taho in the summer, and Vegas in the winter. I am just not a "snow and ice" kind of guy. Probably why I have not shot a muskox yet. The wife and I often vacation in Reno, my trophy room is based on one of the old Western saloons I saw up in Virginia City. Lake Taho is a great vacation destination. I always have enjoyed the SCI conventions in LV better. Looking forward to 2012. Big Grin

Huh? I thought Texas folks were supposed to be tough! What is is, 40 degrees on a cold day in Reno during the show? When I went in '09 I didn't even take a jacket.

Reno for me. I like the smaller venue Reno provides and nobody takes care of us SCI'ers like Reno period. I dislike Las Vegas, just another big, dirty, low life strewn city if you ask me.

I will most likely not attend the Convention in LV and will be the first one I miss in over a dozen years. The last one there(LV) was a disaster, we were stuck in the basement of a hotel with low ceilings, bad food, poor lighting, no shuttle bus service to the Show, expensive cab rides, a real slum place to say the least.

As noted it was a lot WARMER in Reno this year than in Dallas for DSC.

DOJ - I know what you mean, ice is the absolute worse condition to do about anything except ice skate I suppose? I live at 8,500 feet elevation and get about 150 inches of snowfall every year, but ice, we don't get much of that.

That's what I don't understand about all the people griping about the cold and all. In Reno you are in a Hotel, step outside, walk 30 feet to a warm bus, walk 30 feet and your inside the Convention. Repeat the process at days end. We usually don't even take a jacket to the Show. Evenings are spent insde so what's the beef?

Larry and DOJ,

You know I lived in Alaska for 22 years and we could expect minus 40-50 and loads of snow on most winters. None of that makes me like Reno in January. The only advantage and the one keeping the show in Reno is money. It's just cheaper in Reno for SCI. Otherwise I personally think Reno sucks. Las Vegas to me is just a nicer place with much more to do in addition to seeing the show and the weather is much nicer. Reno is quite seedy and it just has a run down depressing atmosphere.

Well, Mark I understand your point of view as an exhibitor but as a attendee I go to Reno, Dallas or where ever to see the show and what is available. As far as I am concerned (about other things to do) they could hold the show any where. Since I am a country boy (Bedford Pop 3,000) most any where is a big town and a pain in the ass. We get about 14 ft of snow in a normal winter where I am in Michigan. The last thing I want to do is go somewhere in the winter where it is cold. I told the SCI folks at the NRA show last month, that as long as it is Reno, I won't go. I would like to see it in Orlando at the Orange County Convention Center. I have been to the SHOT Show there a few times. However, almost any where is fine as long as it is warmer than Reno. I will probably go in 2012, since Vegas is easier to get to than Reno and it is warmer.

Another vote for Reno. The people there are so friendly, from the taxi drivers to the hotel and restaurant staff.

For us coming from Chicago, the weather is warm and we get the direct flight from O'hare to Reno on American.

I must admit, The DSC Convention was pretty cold this year, I parked in the underground parking garage, sprang for the $10 parking fee, and just walked inside; didn't get out in the weather. But I can remember some years were Reno had a lot of snow, one time snow was piled up 6 feet high on the sidewalks from the snow plows; wife and I got our luggage at the airport and had to sludge through the snow and ice to the shuttle to get to the hotel. Also remember other years standing in the blowing snow outside the Reno convention center waiting on the shuttle. Also remember few years back we had some icey rain in Dallas. I remember at the last SCI convention in LV, I walked over to the convention center from the hotel every day instead of taking the shuttle because the weather was so nice. I am sure the reason the convention stays in Reno is money; I was told (don't know if it's true)that SCI decided to change back from Dallas to Reno for the 2013 convention because Reno came back with a better deal. I look forward to being in LV come 2012. horse

If you polled all the PH's at the SCI...I'll bet the majority of them would opt for Vegas...at least the ones I know complain about it being in Reno year after year.

I like Reno. Purely because it is handy for me. Vegas is about the same distance but in Reno I feel like there are fewer distractions. If this were my big vacation for the year like alot of the exhibitors from Africa etc. I am sure I'd feel differently.

Just my own observations of Reno v. Las Vegas over the past 16 years - only missed one show due to illness (Reno 2009).

Reno - SCI is the biggest show all Winter. We make their season, and consequently we are appreciated by the folks who work the taxis, hotels, restaurants and stores and they treat us very well as a result. People who live there are hunters and outdoor folks.

Las Vegas - SCI is just "another" convention in a town that has multiple conventions each week. Taxi drivers are surly and expect huge tips - I once tipped $2.50 for a $5 ride and the guy acted insulted! Nobody really cares that we are with SCI or that we are hunters. Expensive town.

The biggest complaint I ever hear about Reno is the difficulty flying into town. Here's a clue, book your flights early.

I'll take Reno any day, thank you very much!

LionHunter,

Unfortunately booking early doesn't work for some of us. I live on the Leelanau peninsula in Michigan. That means I fly out of Traverse City or drive to Grand Rapids. The schedules have never looked good to me every time I checked and the prices are higher than most other potential locations. Three stops and some of them went to California and then back to Reno. The leave Reno and go to California and back. Now that is why some of us don't want to go to Reno.

SCI can continue to have it there as long as they like. I'm OK with that. I also understand why they have it there, as has been mentioned here. I'm not crazy about Vegas, but it's less time sitting on a plane and cheaper too.

I was gonna let this die....but I have to address all those happy, jolly people in Reno that love to see us there for the SCI Convention; I have found them just as surly as anyone in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, or any other casino town. The hotel staff in Reno never were much help, I registered early and got lousy rooms, and usually asked to be moved. One year I got a room with a "Murphy bed", one of those beds that pulls down from the wall, one was a smoking room that smelled pretty bad, and one room faced a brick wall. Evening meals were over sold twice, and one time I got some guys wife's seat, so I just let her have it and went to the casino. And one year we were wearing our coats after coming in from the snow; you couldn't see our name badges, and the security guy grabs my and my wife's arm and begins escorting us outside, until I was able to show him our badge and get it sorted out. So much for "Happy to see ya'" Big Grin

Another vote for Reno. I live here in Idaho, and the weather in Reno is almost always nicer. It is a 10 hour drive, but we break it up and stay in Jackpot overnight where I usually make enough at craps to pay for my stay at the show. The place we stay each year is appreciative of my business, and it is a good break for my hunting partner and sons. The wives have come a couple times, but decided they'd rather go on a cruise or something instead and let us have boy time together. Wouldn't mind going to Dallas to see and experience something different, but you can kiss me goodbye for Vegas.

I remember Game Coin International Safari Conventions in SA in the 80's. San Antonio is a great location; I went to a convention in San Antonio once in February, left Dallas it was cold, but it was sunny and warm in SA. There is a lot to do and see in SA also, River Walk, Seaworld, Spanish Missions. I wouldn't mind Phoenix for a convention in January.

Traverse City (TVC) would be my preferred origination, but if you looked at that one you probably would understand why it didn't interest me. Sometimes the timing of the flights leaving GR makes it difficult to make. Flight leaves very early requiring an overnight or have one long day. I tried several years and never found a good flight. Maybe the poor economy has helped.

I still won't go until it is out of Reno. Remember my other issue is the weather. I don't want to leave the cold just to get back in it. That is why I went on a hunt in Africa in March 2009. I did sign up in 2008 and had a flight which I didn't like. The more I thought about it the more it bugged me, so I canceled and went to the SHOT Show in Orlando with my gun dealer friend. Thanks for checking. I will have to take a look just for fun.

It is hard to get to from the east coast. The hotels aren't very good. A good restaurant is hard to find. Weather can be a definite problem. I got out last year just before the airport got closed.

They do treat us well there.

Personally, I am ready for a change.

I agree they do treat SCI well because it is not "just another convention", but I would also like to go somewhere else once in a while, and Las Vegas would be my first choice, although I would be open to somewhere in Arizona or California. Phoenix or Scottsdale would be nice. Maybe San Diego. Don't think we need another Safari convention in Texas in January; we already have DSC and HSC.
