The food is always bad, but this year, it was downright horrible. I think the hamburger buns were from 2011.

I skipped lunch on Friday and Saturday it was so bad.

On Sunday, I got a tip from my neighbor that there was a construction food truck parked outside on the loading ramp. I went out there and that food was great (compared to Convention Center food). And it was cheap $4.50 for a box of chicken strips.

Hope he comes back next year.

I have to agree with all of you concerning the convention center food courts; I tried to eat one of their hot dogs and managed to gag down about a third before pitching it in the trash. The quality of food was an item of concern after last years convention and everyones concerns were discussed with the vendor and they promised to improve...seems to me they did not. I will not be part of the post convention debrief this year but I will make sure that the people in the meeting will be aware of the food quality situation.

I would hope that there are clauses in the contract concerning quality & service that could be used to send these servers of piss poor food packing.

My wife and were both disappointed with the food at the food court.

From what i saw the Food made in bulk. Hamburgers were dry and very well done.

Tried the Philly the second day and it was just OK.

Wife tried the hot dog and had an upset tummy.

and the chop sticks were tried just to see if there was something better and we never found it.

I liked the "chicken tenders" w/ fries, had 'em both days. Have eaten much worse grub at some hunts I've been on ( not in Africa, though, US only)

I had a bag of Lays potato chips on Friday and Saturday. I thought they were pretty good. I was disappointed they did not have Cheetos but I figured that was because they did not want orange stuff off of people's fingers on the merchandise in the booths. Oh yeah, and the bottled water was pretty good too, cold and wet, reminded me of a lot of the water at home.

didn't make it to DSC this year. But go to other convention type shows and most times whatever food is availbale pretty much sucks, plus having to wait in long lines to get the crap too.

Don't care for shows were booze is allowed to be among the free roaming, sure there are many folks who can handle the drink or two while walking and talking, but what is remembered by me at these type events are teh impolite, inconsiderate and downright rude ones who can't handle the booze, and that includes both show attendees an also sometimes the folks who man and run the show booths. Keep the damn booze of the floors, if ya really want to drink go to a bar.

Larry,

Don't know how it works on your turf but on this side of the pond we identify several reknown caterers and put the event out to tender with all the appropriate clauses and requirements black on white.

Seems to produce the desired results.

I seem to remember someone saying that the convention center was in charge of the caterers. that they were on contract with the convention center.

The food and drink was OK at SCI last year.
They had a good decaffinated coffee at one place.
The lunch was decent but not the best.
At least there was not the usual fast food mega chain garbage.
They had Heineken beer which is OK.

Seems I remember paying $2.50-$3 bucks for coffee. I had the Panini last year, so again this year. Pricey yes, but it wasn't bad. It was even served hot. I think Andrew has the best idea; who's for a braai next year in the center court? Wink

I would gladly fore go having any food at the show if we can get back to being able to enjoy an adult beverage while we walk around and visit.

Me too!

The lack of adult beverages did save me some money though Wink

Both the issue of bad (or worse) food and the prohibition of walking the show while sipping one's favorite adult libation are being worked on...and are hoping for a positive result on both.

The only "show" I attended this year was a local one here in Salt Lake called "The Western Hunting and Conservation Expo". The food was typical show food - not very good. But there was ONE exception! There were some ladies making deli sandwiches - your choice of roast beef, turkey, ham, etc. with several types of bread to choose from and all the garnishments. They were big and they were GOOD! About $9 with chips included. Give me one of those and a beer or pop and I'm good to go until dinner. I would recommend that anyone who has any pull at SCI or DSC look into this option. Pretty hard to screw up a deli sandwich, especially when they're making it to your specs right in front of you!

I would think that the DSC could work with the convention center (or whoever) and fix this issue. The food has never been great at the show but it hit an all time low this year. Clara and I left the show and went to the Omni to eat everyday but one. However, the Exhibitors are tied to their booths for the most part and have to go for a quick bite inside the convention. We ate inside with our friends from Rigby one day and all of us ended up throwing most of our food in the garbage. The people of DSC do an outstanding job with a great show every year. This is the only area I see that is in need of improvement. DSC is better than that and its Exhibitors and members deserve better. I hope this issue gets sorted out but we won't let that stop us from attending next year's convention. Kiri, Adam and Marc, let's plan on me taking care of lunch next year from outside the convention if we don't get decent options inside.
