I had a JDJ "hand-cannon" in 444 marlin (14" contender). It was definitely a cannon, but it was not an elephant gun.

Why do people think that a oversize handgun will out perform a 416 Rem, 458 Lott, or a 450 #2 ...Ballistics don't even come close to a full size barrel...
A good analogy I will hit your hand with a hammer and your other hand with a sledge hammer

Which one of you "hunters" spent $10,000 on a custom 444 marlin rifle lately??

Here comes the handgun hunter bashing. I agree that a 444 is not a suitable caliber for elephant, but there are several handgun calibers that are.

Mike , what are the ballistics on the 450 #2? Just curious, as I'm not familiar with that caliber. Thanks

Tembo, I agree with everything you posted above except for the word "SUITABLE"! Some handguns are ADIQUATE for Elephant, under absolutely perfect conditions. However I don't believe any handgun is SUITABLE for Elephant on it's own! Certainly not one chambered for 444 Marlin! thumbdown

Tembo, I don't think that is handgun bashing, I have hunted big game with handguns for years, and have taken some very large animals with handguns, so I'm not prone to downing handgun hunting. However, what guys like the one trying to sell that 444 is, try to place handguns in a place where they are not suitable, and do not belong. Anyone who makes the statement that there is something worth $10K, chambered for 444 Marlin, that take more elephant every year than any other cartridge in the world, is simply either a bald faced liar, or just plain stumpid, no other way to say it! bull beer

I have a question for you folks who do hunt with handguns... I often carry a .30 Herrrett T/C with a 10" barrel instead of a rifle when walking my property... I don't even notice that it's in a shoulder holster... but..

... that dang revolver has to weigh as much as many lightweight rifles. To carry it as a "back up", you'd need help even getting out of your truck... What does the thing weigh? I guess you could use it as a crutch if you sprained your ankle or something... Maybe you could lay it across a ditch and get across without getting wet??

I don't carry "back up" handguns... but if I did, at least on this continent, my cheap Tarus .41 mag in some kind of "weighless" alloy is basically forgetable... and it shoots a 210 grain flatnose "solid" at 1310 fps.. about all I can shoot and still hold on to the darn thing.

I'm of the opinion that if it's too much trouble to tote, I'll leave it in camp, and while the subject gun may be a fine primary hunting tool, as a "back up"... I just don't know how I could unholster the bugger in time to do any good. I'd guess that drawing a antique Scotsman's claymore would be about as fast and effective? It just seems impracticable because of weight, length and the necessity to shoot it with both hands...

Not to mention that a .444 would have to shoot a 400 grain bullet (at a velocity that never could be achieved with a handgun barrel) to get the penetration required for any assurety of getting through an elephants 'noggin or even to both lungs/heart.

Look at the post that our own Miss Ann just wrote. She thought she had a "simple" side brain shot and it immediately turned into a throught-the-trunk "emergency". I just kind of like the classic .300 sectional density and over 2100 fps. If it worked for J.A. Hunter, I'll stick with it.

Am I wrong?

Judge To answer your first question- The BFR revolver weighs a shade over 4 pounds. Like you said, definately not a backup gun. The biggest problem with the 444 IMHO is that one has to use bullets designed for the 44 magnum-not a whole lot of decent big game bullets there. I have a TC Encore handgun that is chambered in the .416 GNR. It will put a 400 grain bullet out at 2100 FPS from a 16" BBL. There is also a 450 GNR that puts out a 458 caliber bullet at 2150 FPS. Very close to the 458 Win. Mag but in a handgun configuration, too.

JudgeG, I hunted for several years with a 44 RM, it was about as much as I liked for recoil and noise. The 444 is what the 44 RM should have been, slight download for casual use! While hunting with it, I carried a 22, a 10/22 auto, that put more meat in the pot than the 44 ever did. And, was easier to use!!!

Two hands on that beast, only if one of them is in a welding glove!!! BTDT..

I re-read my post and it may seem that I'm against handgun hunting for DG...

I'm not. I just think that the hunter had better be prepared to pass up lots of shots that one with the "classic" velocity, sectional density, solid (or modern improvement) bullet can comfortably do the deed. Therefore, PH's with "real" DG rifles are going to be necessarily expected (and damn well required) to turn chicken shit to chicken salad on a relatively (and to often for me) frequent basis.

But to say a handgun like the one pictured is going to be useful as "backup" just is foolhardy and irresponsible.

I've killed a couple of dozen bears with a traditional bow and more deer, elk, moose, antelope, hogs, etc, with a longbow than most folks will ever get a chance to hunt (that may be why I'm divorced Big Grin ).. I've had the opportunity several times to hunt African DG with archery equipment. I don't, though. It seems like dancing a little to close to the edge.... as does about any caliber in a hand gun... and do you "really" have a handgun if it weighs as much as a rifle and has about as long a barrel?

More power to you guys who do it, but I'll stick to convention.

According to Kynamco (and I think this is the classic loading), the 450 No 2 uses a 480-grain bullet at a muzzle velocity of about 2175 FPS, producing 5050 foot-pounds of energy at the muzzle.

Dear Member Missing Mojo:

Are you aware that the purpose of the Gunbroker venue, and the ask seller a question function, is to facilitate transactions? Are you aware that your account can be immediately closed for sending unsolicited comments, threats, advice or criticism?

Your comments on ETI auction items have been forwarded to my office. ETI offers only new-in-box items on the auctions, and is one of the largest LE distributors in the US. I am writing you because your comments included criticism, sarcasm, aggression, profane language, and/or unsolicited advice. All ETI auction items come with a no-questions-asked return policy and lifetime guarantees, INCLUDING SHIPPING, so there is no basis for slanderous comments about their listings or customers. We usually find that critical emailers are either jealous, or have mental issues, and cannot exercise the self-control and legal restraint to mind their own business, which are immediately actionable by us in getting the member’s account closed at Gunbroker..

We have a simple response to this type of email: first, a warning. If comments continue, we will then have the emailer barred from the auction venues and their account closed, and/or may also seek legal and regulatory action if the comments can be considered spam, harassment, slander, libel, or felonious threat. This email also is your notice that your IP address has been captured and tracked each time it reaches ETI’s servers, as this email is not public domain, and we reserve the right to backtrack the originating computer address and forward to law enforcement, or use in litigation. You also have now been notified that you have no expectation of privacy in these communications.

One emailer continually harassed ETI’s listings, and continued the harassment after their account was terminated. By examining their feedback, we determined that their buy/sell pattern constituted sale without a license, and they are now serving federal prison sentences on multiple counts of BATF violations. We mention this because we rarely get criticism or unsolicited advice from fellow dealers, and often the person attacking would rather look anywhere but in the mirror. If you continue to have issues, please have your attorney contact me.

Very Sincerely,

PS: Our gunsmith tells me that the 444Marlin quote was from the head of R and D at Marlin, but of course he's not the president of a double barrel rifle shooting thingy, and is only a humble engineer. Hey Rusty, are you scared now? shame

I especially like the PS mentioning the head of R and D for Marlin being an engineer, like that immediately makes him an expert on shooting elephant.

I also like the crack about "barely making it through HS" and how her spelling error ("be" instead of "bet") and the legalese "Thingy", makes her sound intelligent.

BTW, Are people allowed to complain to GunBroker.com about false advertising in the ads?

Obviously, ETI gets a fair amount of email ridiculing their offerings and/or the ALL CAPS, italicized, used car salesman hype they use in their laughable efforts to sell them.

Rusty received a form "anti-harassment" letter, except for the post script, which was clearly ad libbed by a complete moron.

The relevant rules are generally under the heading of "Unauthorized Practice of Law" in the state where the alleged violation occurred.

Note: I am not taking the position that the lawyer in question is not licensed or authorized to practice. I just could not find her in a (non-mandatory) professional directory. Many lawyers are not listed there as the listings cost money.

ya know....anyone that can actually shoot that hog leg has the kind of hands that can take down an elephant without the gun. This is the type that hunts ele with merely a knife and a rope.

Lay the rope near a pan and wait for the ele to step in the noose. When it does you jerk the rope hard tipping the ele over and then you run up and cut it's throat. The revolver isn't needed at all.....
