i thought about the bigger model but i am only 5' 9" and 165 lbs and figured i didn't need the bigger model. as far as a sleeping bag, i wasn't even planning on carrying one. Cam said to expect day temps of 100-110( remember we are going late March) and even if it cools down to 80 at night( doubtful) i figure i will sleep in a surgical scrub suit and wouldn't need a pad except maybe for comfort. am i wrong? As far as comfort(padding) you won't need the pad. The hammock is very comfortable in that respect. I recommend the pad for its insulating qualities. Even at 75 degrees a hammock is so efficient at robbing heat that it can freeze you. You might sleep in scrubs at 90 in a hammock, but think you would regret that choice if the temps drop below 80 or if you happen to be damp at nightfall. I took a light slepping back and you need it in the rainforest on some nights. I would recommend to take one on the savannah hunts as well.

In situation with similar temps i use a sleeping bag liner only. I have a couple made out of light polar fleece, they are lighter than a blanket and take up very little space. I have u sed them in temp ranges from mid 70 to mid 40 and been ok.

I will be getting the bigger hammock and bringing a light sleeping bag. I am a pretty accomplished outdoorsman with 8 trip to southern Africa under my belt(9 this August). That said, I will appreciate any helpful advise some of you veterans can offer up. You can borrow money, but you can't borrow time. Don't wait, go now. I don't have much choice: it takes me four or five years to save up for a hunt. Meantime, I have to hunt vicariously through guys like you. Wish I could go along!

The freeze dried food will be well worth taking along. One thing to keep in mind is that the grocery stores in Yaounde are very well stocked. I firmly believe this has a lot to do with the fact that Cameroon was a French Colony. Things like crackers, coffee, powdered milk, condensed milk, ultra high heat pasteurized milk, sardines, bread, canned meat, cooking oil, rice, and laughing cow cheese(does not require refrigeration) are all available. I was very impressed with the selection. I would take along a couple of boxes of Lipton French onion soup(four envelopes total). This stuff make very tasty rice and is a great seasoning for game meat. Cameroon is a great country. I am very excited for you(and more than a bit envious). BTW, youtube has great videos on setting-up the hammocks. Jason "You're not hard-core, unless you live hard-core." _______________________ Hunting in Africa is an adventure. DO NOT stress on food. Cameroon has a good selection and there is something about being in the "real" bush that makes meat, rice and coffee feel like a real feast. My advice on what to take with you(and what I will do next time): One mountain house meal per day, onion soup for seasoning, lots of drink mix(to kill the taste of the water) and that is it.... Once in Cameroon you can buy all the stuff you need. High on my list would be coffee, rice cooking, oil, sardines, crackers and powdered milk. Every time I read your posts I have to fight the urge to call Cam and book a hunt! Jason "You're not hard-core, unless you live hard-core." _______________________ Hunting in Africa is an adventure.
