Anybody ever stay in the hotel in the "sterile" area of the Johannesburg airport? What did you do with your firearms? Were you able to put them in your room?

I know I asked this question some time back and got the response that there were a few folks on the board who were booked to stay there.

I'm just wondering how it went.

I've stayed there during a long layover. My guns were checked through, even though it was about 10 hours. Optima came to my gate before I flew up to Zimbabwe with a confirmation receipt that even had the cargo container in which the gun was loaded (and then into the a/c).

JudgeG ... just counting time 'til I am again finding balm in Gilead chilled out somewhere in the Selous.

Judge G,
I've enjoyed many of your posts. What, pray tell, is the literary source of balm in Gilead? I've only seen it in Poe's famous poem, and the response was the predictable "Nevermore".

JudgeG,
Could it be from here:

Is there no balm in Gilead, Is there no physician there? Why then is there no recovery For the health of the daughter of my people? Jer. 8:22 NKJV

I know there are other places where the bible talks of the "balm of Gilead" as a comfort.

I am a fan of Poe, the Bible and the Selous.. and I do find joy in all three.

WyoJoe has it right as to "balm of Gilead" being a comfort (symbolic of Grace).

Hell, This is what I get for being an ill read SOB. All this time I thought that Gilead was a brand of scotch.

What if you have a full overnight layover? SSA won't keep your guns but only so long. I hate the idea of all the RSA paperwork to import my guns for only one night.

Air 2000 will handle the import and store them for you if you want....... I'm not sure about the cost, but think it's around US$200.

GA, In February, I stayed overnight in Jo'burg at the Protea Hotel (never again) and my guns were checked straight from Nashville to Bulawayo. They arrived two days later (I was already in the bush) but that was United's fault as I had to jump a last minute flight out of Nashville due to bad weather. My luggage and gun case remained in Nashville, thus the delay. If you have concerns, stay at the Afton House. They will meet you, take you and return you to the airport the next morning. They also offer a "gun" service. Have a great trip, LDK

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."

Get in touch with Afton Guest House. http://www.aftonguesthouse.com/links.htm

It is worth the few dollars to stay there. Hunters coming in and out of Africa stay there and it is worth the price to talk with all of them. My wife and I "had" to stay there for an extra day on account of weather. It was a great time and I don't begrudge one moment. Not only are the owners on top of the requirements on guns and travel, but they are especially gracious hosts. They pick youu up and deiver you to the airport.

Have a wonderful trip.
