UPDATE I finally talked to a human at the U.S. Department of State regarding obtaining an export permit inorder to leave a rifle in RSA next trip over. Unfortunately the person who I talked to is not the person I need to deal with. He did give me a name and phone number of the person I need to deal with. But she, like all the rest, does not answer the phone. I was told that I need to submit a government application form to obtain a one time exemption to export a rifle. That is Form DSP-5. Guess what you can't download that form, only the nine pages instructoions on how to fill out the form. Looks like someone needs to send me the form and the someone is not answering the phone. Don't get too excited. You still have to work out how you can leave the rifle in RSA and that ain't gonna be easy or quick. If you import it on a temporary import permit, you'll have to export it at the end of your trip, so you'll have to have a permanent import permit for it and whoever you leave it with, will have to have it on his licence and that'll take time to do......... probably a considerable time. I'd guess the easiest way to do it is to find a gun dealer in RSA who is experienced with the import process to arrange the permanent import permit and meet you at the airport and then take posession of it until whoever is going to have the rifle can get the CFR to put it onto his licence for him. If you need a gundealer who is experienced in overses imports, you might like to contact Sabi Rifles in Nelspruit and their site is www.sabirifles.co.za Hope that helps and good luck with the US side of things.

This is not for a temporary export. The rifle is going to stay in RSA, that is if we get all the paperwork done. He is already working on getting his ownership permit in RSA. As I understand it he has to show that he has a need to own more than one firearm and the application goes to a review board. Luke, As another poster commented it would be much easier to just write your PH a check and let him do with it as he wishes. Mark MARK H. As well as getting the firearm on his permit, you'll also need a permanent import licence for the firearm and I'm fairly sure you'll need a gun dealer wit a fair bit of experience in importing firearms to do that. BTW, although things are improving, that review board has been known to take several years to make a decision. - I kid you not! Also someone will also need to pay the import taxes and they ain't cheap. Personally, I reckon Mark has given you some good advice!

Shakari I agree. That would be much easier. However the rifle is here and he wants it there and I said I would do what I could do to help get it there. Elephant Hunter, Double Rifle Shooter Society, NRA Lifetime Member, Ten Safaris, in RSA, Namibia, Zimbabwe

You are way beyond mere "conspiracy theorist"! I know there is much waste, fraud and abuse in our gov't, but I sure as hell hope were not actually paying someone to read this stuff. JPK Free 500grains

You don't need to be wearing a tinfoil hat to believe the govt is monitoring this stuff. The NSA is constantly monitoring internet traffic, and cell phone traffic for any communications between U.S. citizens and citizens of forign countries. That is just a fact of life post 911. To all the Gentlemen who have replied to the question: The purpose of my inquiry was to "prove" to a man who "may" live in RSA, that it was indeed more complicated than he maintained, and indeed VERY ILLEGAL on both ends. When I do return, I intend to tour, shoot game on cull hunts, and rent firearms over there. On my last trip, I used the baggage weight that would have been "Guns" to bring school supplies for the black children. Much more rewarding, and for the first time, I saw and shot( quite well) a Musgrave rifle. Many thanks to you all, Sincerely, Luke

It was only a year or two ago that the TZ game dept published a report, part of which that was quoted on this forum, that quoted a forum member who hag made an unfortunate comment word for word. If the TZ game dept can do it......and did do it, don't for a moment think that other organisations and individuals can't or wouldn't do it. As Muletrain pointed out, in this post 9/11 society, many Governments (and indeed even NGOs etc) will routinely monitor all kinds of internet and cell phone traffic etc. Also don't for a moment think the antis don't do more that their fair share of snooping! Big Brother is watching whether we like it or not.

Update on my attempt to jump through the hoops to get a rifle to someone in S.A. For my paperwork I need to supply the State Department with a copy of the PH's RSA import application which he can't get without my paperwork. For his paperwork he needs to supply a coppy of my US State Department import application which I can't get without a copy of his paperwork. That is by definition a CATCH-22 situation. There may be a nice CZ in .458 Lott for sale in the classified section here pretty soon.
