......... well, they will be as soon as I wire the money to them!

Some may have read this on other forumns but for those that have not.......

Hope you can use this information for planning or maybe comparing??

We had the skins/capes tanned in RSA by Derek Robinson Taxidermy. Here was this cost for my trophies:

1 x Nyala Skull.$ 50.00
1 x Nyala Full Mount Cape - Tan.$ 250.00
1 x Zebra Cape, Back skin - Tan.$ 225.00
1 x Duiker Skull.$ 25.00
1 x Duiker Cape - Tan.$ 35.00
1 x Impala Skull.$ 40.00
2 x Impala Capes - Tan.$ 80.00
1 x Impala Back skin - Tan.$ 30.00
1 x Warthog Tusks.$ 10.00
1 x Warthog Skull, Tusks.$ 55.00
1 x Warthog Cape - Tan.$ 60.00
Sub Total.$ 860.00

Packing & Documentation.$ 172.00
Permits: General export permit.$ 48.00
Veterinary export permit.$ 48.00
Total..$1,128.00

My cost for shipping is $671.81.

As a comparison, in 2003 I had capes and horns for kudu, Blue wildebeest, impala, bushbuck and blesbuck and several souvenirs and shipping was $396.

Do not know what the import fees will run yet but in 2003 they ran around $200..... I think??

Looks like this will be running me around $2K, but thats for 7 animals, or around $285 each. I could have paid to have the skins dipped and then have them tanned here in the states, but that would have driven the cost up probably a $100 each. I have heard plenty of horror stories about tanned skins from Africa, but I have not had one problem. I visited the taxidermy shop, that employes about 50 folks, and they do the tanning there and use the same proccesses and solutions as most tanneries here.

Hope this does not scare anyone off from going to Africa to hunt. One thing to remember, these costs, and the cost of the hunt, airline tickets and even the final taxidermy, is stretched over more than a year, so it relieves some of the strain on the ole cash flow.

As a couple of others on here, I do my own taxidermy work so I save on that expense. Another good thing about being a part time taxidermist is, I will be getting over 30 other trophies with this shipment and will be doing the mounting. I love doing it and it helps pay for my "bad habits"....... like hunting Africa!

Again, hope y'all can find this info handy.

Bonaro,

Since you have the warthogs, don't they have to go to a USDA Taxidermist for a deswining? Or You must be a USDA approved site...

Mike, since his are tanned, they may not be considered "raw" trophies.

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."

thank you for the detailed pricing. It helps someone like me that is price minded but still wants to think about hunting Africa.

+1. On the warthog, did you have 2 sets of tusks, or does the skull have reproduction tusks?

I shot a very old cule that only had one tusk. The other I had the skull cleaned and the cape because I am not sure if I will do a shoulder skin mount or not.

i have had Derek Robinson do 12 animals for me(shoulder mounts and full body mounts), including my leopard, picture of which i have posted on AR. he does great work at a good price with great communication. haven't used his dip and pack service but i would expect equally fine service.

Here is another set of figures from Namibia from my hunt last May at Gras Ranch:

Gemsbok skulls clean and bleach 2 x $96
Flywisk from Gemsbok Tails 2 x $36
Warthog tusk clean and bleach 2 pair x $8
Warthog skull clean and bleach 2 x $85
Blesbok skull clean and bleach 1 x $60
Blesbok skin treatment 1 x $28
Springbok skull clean and bleach 1 x $60
Springbok skin treatment 1 x $16
Kudu skull clean and bleach 1 x $96
Kudu skin treatment 1 x 44
Blue Wildebeest skull clean and bleach 1 x $96
Blue Widebeest skin treatment 1 x $96
Mountain Zebra skin treatment 1 x $70
Packing $144.60
Documentation $75

Total $1183.60 for dip/pack in Namibia

Then comes the shipping agent:
Documentation/veterinary paperwork $182.40
Palletizing $50
Short Payment for dip/pack $40
Airfreight to Houston $704.70

Total $977.10 for shipping agent in Namibia
(85kg , 108x74x65cm)

So that makes it $2160.70 so far. There is still ABX in Houston that will want some money for clearing customs etc. and finally my taxidermist here in Texas.
