Does anybody recognize the PH in this video? Hopefully one day we will learn to quit posting this stuff on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5f3SbP2PC78#t=96

Mike i have seen this before and yes this should have never made it to a video. I do think that they could have been closer to the elephant for the first shot. Hunter, was not prepared to make a second or even a third shot. PH's should have been shooting earlier. >>>>>>>>>>>>>> "You've got the strongest hand in the world. That's right. Your hand. Pardon my ignorance... What is the issue with this elephant hunt? Gerhard FFF Safaris Capture Your African Moments Hunting Outfitter (MP&LP) Proffesional Hunter (MP&LP) History guide Wildlife Photographer www.fffsafaris.co.za

I totally agree. Smoking on Safari is not a good look. I dare say not everyone kills their Ele from ten metres with a perfect brain shot.

It will not be the 1st or last elephant not taken cleanly by a hunter. The PH let the hunter keep shooting until the elephant got onto his feet again and then dropped it with two shots from his double with the client putting in the final shot... Should only clean one shot kills on elephant be posted on youtube? Again I am asking this out of ignorance as there are a lot more experienced hunters here on AR... Gerhard, I think - I might be totally wrong on this - what I call the Hollywood mentality has set in. People expect ALL animals to drop stone dead as soon as the shot is fired, as per Hollywood. Or even better for them to be blown to smithereens!! Many times I have watched hunting videos with non hunters, and they always express their surprise that animals do NOT drop dead at the shot. They do not seem to understand that an animal perfectly shot in the heart, might run for quite a distance and take some time to die.

I agree, Not one animal reacts the same when shot even with the same shot placement. Gerhard FFF Safaris Capture Your African Moments Hunting Outfitter (MP&LP) Proffesional Hunter (MP&LP) History guide Wildlife Photographer www.fffsafaris.co.za

I have seen plenty of buffalo hunts on film that were not too dissimilar. Is elephant hunting supposed to be different? I realise that hunting buffalo at 10 yards is not recommended while elephants are sometimes taken at than distance. "When the wind stops....start rowing. Funny that people here are getting all fussy about this hunt. Certainly not the first time an elephant has stood back up after things looked finished following the initial shot. What followed was not in the least bit horrific and I have seen much worse. Do you really think anti-hunters look at this and see it as any worse than the hunt that "cleanly" takes the bull down with a perfect frontal brain shot?????

No they don't, and as far as I am concerned, they can bloody well go take a hike. It really is none of their business, I just wish they go get a life instead of chasing others because they do things THEY don't like! There is plenty of things people do in their every day lives that I find very objectionable, but, I don't waste any time trying to get them to stop!

I did not watch the video but was thinking do the fellows who are disgusted with the video and put down their opinion at the bottom of youtube do a search for a elephant hunting video just so they can throw shit?

In the original post I was not referring to the shooting as that would definitely be hypocritical of me. Also I will always support our right to post hunts on social media. I emailed my wife a picture of an elephant I shot two weeks ago. She put it on Facebook which is something I would not do. I had to comeback and explain the role hunting plays in conservation. One part of me says screw what the anti-hunters think, as we will never change their minds. But another side of me believes there is a large group out there that if they understood better the role hunting plays in conservation they would accept hunting much more. We seldom get that point across in videos. Hunting is only seen as a blood sport, that was the reason for my comment. The Internet and in particular social media plays a huge role in public opinion, not necessarily facts, that can affect our ability to hunt in the future. Look at it this way, does the beef industry put out videos of killing cattle? No because it would upset a lot of people and hurt their business. People know cattle die to feed the masses, they just do not want to see it.

That is spot on. I am sure there will be those on AR that will respond saying, "that is part of the problem people need to understand the reality of the situation and not operate under some illusion about the process". We have to accept that not everyone sees these issues through the same lens we do, and the more in your face you make the issue the more likely it is that you take someone that may now be neutral or agnostic towards the issue and convert them to advocates for the other side. I understand the concern over posting video on widely accessed social media, but also, at least at times, lean to the viewpoint to "screw 'em if they can't see their own hypocrisy" in eating meat or wearing leather belt or shoes, carrying a leather purse or driving a car with leather seats and bitching about hunting. Maybe inserting a commentary on the typical use of ALL of the meat, etc, would help prevent the unintentional creation of additional anti-hunters?... As far as this hunt, maybe they could have gotten closer, but it would be Monday Morning Quarterbacking to assert that they should have. It is the PH and client's joint call, taking into consideration the sportiness of the client, the ability of the client, the elephant's awareness at that time, perhaps other elephants around, the prospects of finding another suitable elephant if that one takes off... Lots of considerations none of us are able to judge from the short video, except maybe to draw the likely accurate conclusion that that hunter wasn't up for a series of LONG tracking jobs day in and day out that may have been forthcoming if they didn't take that opportunity. As far as the hunter's performance, his first shot wasn't a total muff, he knocked the ele down with what appears to be a 416. Notice some of the video appears recreated, he cycles the action and nothing comes out - no spent case, and the magazine appears empty. Perhaps his actual performance was a little better than his staged performance, who knows, who cares. The PH's performance appears to be excellent, imo. He resist shooting until he really must, giving his client every opportunity to accomplish the job without the PH joining in. How refreshing compared to videos where the PH shoots without giving the client the opportunity to kill his elephant on his own? There was little risk of the elephant escaping while the PH was holding off, and once the client shoots the PH's job is limited to keeping the client safe from a charge by the target ele or another one, and to ensuring a wounded ele does not escape, and he did his job very well, imo. I thought that the PH was very professional throughout the video. He was obviously well experienced with elephant hunting, remained cool and collected and as JPK noted stayed out of the shooting until necessary. Just what I would expect from a Zim PH. 465H&H

I fully agree, each animal is reacting diffently despite being perfectly shot. What here I see is a honest described hunt. Not a staged "propanganda hunt" It could be the epitome of this old gentleman hunting life. That's why he perhaps posts it? Critics is easy. Was he previously outsmarted, or scared or exhausted for not closing to the bull? His shooting? overwhelmed by emotion, one can understand it? Now for the uneducated public, surely a poor show. Most of us can afford ele hunting when fairly aged (my case) and often overweighted, not a hollywood glamour look at all. Then the game isn't falling dead right there as we are used to see in any movy. Bad. Eventually, we boasted instead of being devasted by the drama. This sort of clip is very informative for us but devastating for the ordinary public. J B de Runz Be careful when blindly following the masses ... generally the "m" is silent

The poor shooting by the client notwithstanding, I thought that was a pretty good presentation of how an elephant hunt is conducted.

Like they say "Stuff happens". A good friend and his PH fired 13 poorly placed shots on his elephant, in a running gun battle. I'm sure he's embarassed every time he watches it!
