I am investigating air ambulance options for my Tanzania safari. It is my understanding the MedJet will transport a member from a hospital over 150 miles from their home, to the hospital of choice. But, who gets you out of the bush to the hospital where MedJet will pick you up?

I was under the impression that they would not come to camp to get you, that you had to be hospitalized before their coverage would take over.

Then I was told that a membership with The Flying Doctors was part of my membership. http://www.amref.org/

Good thing too, I would have had to pay big bucks to get air ambulanced out to a hospital in Dar, Nairobi, or Arusha. I do not know the going rate for a King Air 300 in Africa, but I am sure I burned up 4 hours on the clock getting them to me and me to Nairobi. Probably at least $1000/hr + EMT + ambulance from airport to hospital + + + + +

It adds up.

I e-mailed MedJet about the flying Doctors and evacuation from the bush. Here is their reply:

"We do not include membership in the Flying Doctors program, but we do have authorized affiliates that have access to remote landing strips. The member or professional hunter would have to call MedjetAssist, and if the member would meet our inpatient criteria we could evacuate him from the bush. We do use the Flying Doctors out of Nairobi and they are one of our affiliates. The member would first be taken to a local hospital to be evaluated. A decision on repatriation back to the US would be made after the evaluation."

There are others besides MedJet as well. I buy one-time deals when I go. But I got to tell, MedJet was impressive with Wendell.

Scott, Sounds like to me you need to be careful. 30ott6 is just waiting for you to keel over.

Are you going to SCI?

Hartley,
If he waits, its OK. I'm afraid he might try and accelerate the process!
