through our many trips to africa, one of the things which always seemed to be necessary has been terrorizing baboons. when sufficiently scared they can be some really funny creatures. For instance back a few years when you could take a few fireworks on the plane, we'd take bottle rockets. in the afternoon when the troop would come to the waterhole we'd wait until they were drinking and then sail a couple of rockets in their direction. The whole troop would take off screaming and running. Or there was big old dog that would sit on top of the biggest rock on a kope. constantly chattering, The rock was about 20-30 feet tall. well a guy can only take so much so lets see what happens when you shoot the rock right next to the babo., Poof - he screams and leaps off the high side. Or, the one day when there was this guy sitting on one of the dirt tracks about 300 yds away. We needed some leopard bait and thought maybe he would do. only thing was a 9,3x74 has a pretty steep trajectory and at 300 yds., well the bullet hit right under his butt. The jet propulsion could easily been seen as he evacuated himself totally during the upwards leap.. Then again there is a slingshot. was wondering what a babo would do if he got hit with a paintball. Never did find out cause there wasn't enough velocity to rupture the paint ball, but now a marula nut, that was great, two babos sitting next to each other. Hit one with the nut and he proceeds to beat the chit out of the guy next to him, while the 3rd one grabs the nut for lunch. yup - lots of fun terrorizing baboons.

During my last trip, the PH set a trap for one exceptionally troublesome baboon, and sure enough he got caught in it that same afternoon.

Next, he was whitewashed white and let off.

He ran back to join his troop, but they would have nothing to do with this white baboon.

It was hilarious seeing him being driven off and that poor confused fellow didnt understand what was happening.

Unfortunately a rainstorm that night put an end to his misery, but we had no more trouble from him after that.

On my first trip to Africa we drove past a cattle yard. It was full of baboons picking through the fresh cow pods eating the worms and insects they found. Boy that was gross. I always like shooting a couple on each of my trips. Their skulls make nice bookends minus the worms and insects.
