I know the M14 and M1 Garand are great rifles, but do any of you think that either could make it through this torture test? How about an AK47?

That AR takes a severe beating in that video. The AimPoint is the product that really shines in it. I think the AK would do every bit as well as long as optics weren't mounted. Not so sure about the M14 or M1. The break down assembly of those rifles would probably be thier undoing.

I wonder how the AR-10 style rifles or FN FAL would fair.

The AR 10 should fare about the same. You are correct the Aimpoint was the star of the show.

The AK would be fine in the above test. The AR however would almost certainly fail the "Somali Pirate" test.

Scroll down about 60% for images....

By the looks of some of the bores shown in those pictures it's very obvious those particular weapons were not fired recently. They were full of rust which they wouldn't have been if they were fired recently, unless those guns set for some time after the last firing. I'm not sure the AK would pass test, sure would love to see them do the same one on it.

Not too many items can survive a bushhog test. Even the famous torture-tested Glock 21 (Bigbore's, you can google it) would be toast. An AK would be toast, too. So would a crowbar......uh, wait.....an AK is a crowbar.

That reminds me........ever have a hog flail cut loose and run through the sidewall of a bushhog? Yup, even a bushhog won't survive a bushhog torture test.

This is the only photo showing any portion of the bores and I think (on at least two out of the three rifles) they appear obviously cleaner than the exteriors. It wouldn't take much time at all in sea air and enduring saltwater spray to throw down a full coat of rust anyway. They might have been shooting corrosive ammo to boot and it's not like they are cleaning that out with some high-tech stuff they bought out of Brownells. Wink
IMHO, even the rustiest bore in the pic could have been fired three or four weeks ago and have that much rust in it given the conditions they are in. The other two quite frankly, may have been fired more recently than that.

P.S. My wife thinks it is hysterical that I am sitting here debating the functionality of Somali Pirate hardware. Big Grin

RE Brush hog test.
My grandfather bought a Servis brush hog in the early 70s. He asked what the largest brush it would cut. They told him any brush he could drive the tractor over would be ok.

Later he had one of the struts from the 3 point hitch drop away from the tractor axle and swing under the mower. The strut is similar to a 50 BMG ground gun barrel. The mower cut it in half and the loose end was lost.

I don't think there is a small arm that would survive a direct strike from a brush hog blade.

Yes, it's a very tough test. I certainly hope everyone saw the "smily" face at the end of the post.

There must be a story behind that twisted metal. Bungied to roll bar fail? Surprised you even found it. I've found just one flail over the years. Sam

I always heard that foreign-made ammo was corrosive, but this is ridiculous!

Those AKs look almost fresh from the Tula Arsenal. Just a slight coat of rust-colored camo, methinks. About par for that part of the world.

Sure would like to know THAT story!
