Hey guys-
I'm wanting to put an extended length free-float handguard on my fake M4. I'll also have to put a low profile gas block on it. Can someone with a minimum amount of skill (like myself) do this?

It's not that difficult, but to save you some time, check out AR15.com and they have fair amount of data there regarding building, modifying, etc. for 15's.

I assembled a 16" mid length upper the other day. It took about a half-hour including a break for coffee.

As the poster above points out. There are detailed instructions on how to build AR's on AR15.com.

Once you have the proper tools, it's about as complicated as an oil change.

Here's my latest.

Yes, but you need the proper tools. You'll need a barrel wrench, action block and a punchpin set in the least. I have a lengthy post with pictures somewhere in the Military and Military Surplus Forum about putting a gun together. I think it's from last summer-- can't remember. Not even sure about the Forum.

What you have to do is...

secure the upper receiver in a vise (why we use the action block),

remove the handguard(s),

push out the pin that secures the gastube,

remove the gastube,

remove the front sight base (this can be a real nancy pelosi) by punching out the tapered pins if yours is the triangular base or just loosen the allen screws if your is the block type,

unscrew the barrel nut with the barrel wrench and remove it.

You now have a stripped barrel just hanging on your upper. Now,

screw on the barrel nut that came with the free-float handguard using the barrel wrench,

line up the hole in the nut that best matches the hole in the upper,

attach the gas block by tightening its two allen screws,

insert the gastube,

pin it in the gasblock,

slide the handguard over the barrel and tighten it to the nut with all the torque your hands can generate. DO NOT use loc-tite of any color.

Unless I have missed something, that ought to do it...

Here's the whole thread...

I appreciate the input, guys. I have access to the tools so I guess I'll just nut up and order the parts. Thanks again.
