Scope choice?

I have a new M1A and an FAL on the way. I could use some input. I would like to get a Trijicon of some kind or another illuminated reticle scope.

I have a 5 X 20 Mil Dot with a green dot that I like very much.

Most of my shooting will be 100 yards, with an occasional trip to the 300 for some F class. I have no experience with battle scopes and I don't know if that is the right choice?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Rusty,

I am the happy owner of a Leupold Mark 8 scope, mounted on an FN SCAR heavy. It is a very sweet scope.

The power range is 1.1x8. It seems the best of both worlds - an illuminated crosshair at 1 power, all the way out to 8x for long range precision. It's a bit spendy though. You might want to look in Ebay, got mine there for less than half retail.

The one draw back is that the Mark 8 is heavy. The other option to consider is the Mark 6. Same great optics, 1x6 variable, illuminated crosshairs.

Have fun shopping!

The 7.62 NATO version ACOG. They are really fantastic scopes. They improved them with a battery lit reticule now where before they the optic fiber to pickup outside light. I must confess the older optical fiber ones worked very well too and if you have an LED light on your rifle it will throw enough light that the optical fiber picks it up and lights the reticule. They are expensive though.

A $100 Graf's special Burris FF-II 2-7X with a German #4 reticle. Light, compact, good eye relief and box are darn bright and clear optics.

As mentioned, Nikon does make a good quality scope for the dollar and the 2x7 seems fine for your ranges. Only caution I would offer is that the M1A with companion mount(???) does add weight and will require some sort of cheek piece to gain good eye relationship with optics. Just a suggestion, but might want to take a look at the Burris Fast Fire II/III "dot" type sight. Installs in pocket of issue rear sight, just a few ounces, and is a definite improvment in sight picture for older eyes than the issue sight. Not a scope/magnification, but weight/bulk is not there and find mine to be very adequate for out to 300yds. plus.
