Hey there, my son is looking to pick up an AR in .308. He originally was looking at a custom, but figured it was worth checking out the factory stuff as well. Opinions on best (most accurate) out there in .308 are appreciated. Anyone with a super accurate custom please chime in as well. Thanks

Two quick options come to mind.

If quality and accuracy are more important than money:

LMT or Les Baer. Both guarantee sub-moa accuracy, both are over three-grand.

reasonable priced:

I shot the LAR AR-10 clone at SHOT. two 5-shot groups at 100yds with a scope in the .7xx" size.
go to www.largrizzly.com and check them out. LAR uppers and lowers are forged, in house.

My PD went with RRA a couple months ago. They are about MOA, suppressed or not.

I have been shooting AR-15's for more than forty years. Everything I have seen from LAR is well made.

I strongly suggest that which ever way you go, have the muzzle threaded for a suppressor and a cap fitted to cover the threads. Take a good look
at the YHM system. They make a very effective flash suppressor/QD suppressor system.

The other thing is backup iron sights (buis). Look at the Dueck set. Looking at a clock face, they attach to the rail at 3 o'clock. All you need to do is roll the rifle to your left about thirty degrees, and you can use them.

regards,

Rich

I believe Noveske makes one. There are 3 of his uppers in .223 in the family right now and they all are first rate.

There are getting to be a few AR 10 manufacturers now. Here are a few: DPMS, ArmaLite, RRA, CMMG, Knight, Noveske, Les Baer, Colt (with their new 901), LWRC, Largrizzly, MEGA has or going to field a rifle, and there are more I haven't listed. There are more if you build one from their receivers.

Unless some independent qualified testing group tests all the complete rifles out there it's only going to be personal opinions and speculation for replies, although some will actually own and tested their particular brand.

Some of the less expensive ones on the market are okay, but it's like owning a chevy/ford as compared to a Mercendes/BMW/Lexus...you get the idea. I won't list them as not to offend anyone that owns one. You can built a premium one yourself, but not cheap to do.

I have a DPMS SASS that shots consitently in sub MOA. It's about half the price of LMT or Les Bauer and will give them a run for thier money. It is heavy but then again chevys are suppose to be. We are not talking about a feather weight design.

i'll tell you where i put my money
remington r25 308 - one might call it a dpms, as well, though the r25 is a different featureset than any dpms.

i spent 150 on a trigger, 110 on a buffer spring and buffer (hydraulic) as i want to protect my optics as much as possible and that i HATE the spoon on a cheese grater noise in the a2 buttstock.

in my opinion.. which is untarnished with experience on the matter, i went with the r25.

i don't expect much better than moa with good loads, which EVERYONE claims they reach with an r25 and new trigger

Not disputing what you posted and you like. You done fine. I'll bet I have a lighter AR 10 then you do and I really can't see any of them ruining any optics. There just isn't much recoil or shock there.

It's easier for me to refer to any large AR that shoots calibers like the 308 as an AR 10 rather then to name them by their correct name which can become difficult. All this because ArmaLite has the trademark patent on AR 10.

J,
i've got a digisight that i plan on keeping forever.. and i want a rifle my wife won't whine about shooting....

so, slow it down, make sure it feeds, and if it helps the optics, great.

SmokinJ, If you are talking to me I was not trying to be confrontaional. I was just saying for people that live on a budget there is still options. The SASS is one of thier more expensive rifle so DPMS builds a rifle for all budgets. I hunt deer and hogs with mine. If I do my part it's one shot and done. What do you have. If I could afford it I would buy a LMT.

In the for what it’s worth column --- I have one of the DPMS – Panther – AP4 – this rifle shoots!--- the groups I have been getting are well beyond my expectations – only problem of note was related to the factory clips -- which I have sent back and DPMS promptly replaced them – although I bought the Mag P’s and they have worked flawlessly – I am a very happy camper with this weapon.

No personal expierience with this rifle, but I only hear good things about the Gap 10. If I ever deviate from my Garand and M-14's I will be giving this rifle a hard look.

I cast my vote about ten days ago. I bought a DPMS 308, the heavy, fluted 24" barrel. I stuck my old B&L 36X target scope on it, and fed it some Black Hills Match 168gr ammunition. I got just under 1" at 100yds, and 2.2" at 300yds for two 5-shot groups at each yardage. Rounds fired at 1 minute spacing, off of a BR front rest and rear bunny ear bag. Thirty-eight degrees, and maybe 5-6mph wind from 3 o'clock.

That will work for me, if I can replicate that accuracy with a load of my own in once-fired LC brass.

Well, I made the entry leap into the AR field last night. I was admiring a friend's AR 10 again, in 308, which I have shot, and it was fun. So I bid on an AR 10 lower on GB and won the auction. The reasons I went for the AR 10 is because I like the one my buddy has, and Armalite offeres the upper in 338 Federal, and because the lower I bought has green stock and grip. I wanted the 338 Fed because it throws a heavier bullet, if I want to do that, and because I can easily make brass from the range pickup 308 stuff I have. I have so much of it already and it just keeps coming, and I can't resist picking it up. Big Grin I may never have to buy brass, and the issue of the semi-auto flinging the brass away becomes almost moot.

My favorite 308 AR that I have shot so far is the lighter weight JP.

I shot 5 different factory loads, all were well under one inch.
The fore end is the same size as a 223 fore end.

It makes the rifle handle very nice.

LMT makes an excellent AR-10. My vote (and purchases) have gone to NOVESKE!! I have a Noveske H-Bar 18" that shoots 5 shot groups like it was a sniper rifle. Consistent with Fed GMM and Win GM.

Not far behind, and a heck of a lot cheaper; Armalite AR-10 T.

I've been happy as hell with both of mine.

I have been out shopping for long range AR's but in 5.56. Another one that is first rate is the LaRue Tactical OBR in the AR-10 308 platform.

I just dont want to get into even more loadings so I was staying the with 223/5.56 and I am seriously looking the the Larue OBR in that caliber.

One thing I can say is that my Armalite AR's hae been first rate in terms of build and accuracy.

The DPMS prices sure look good too.
