I am thinking of necking the case to 416, adding a bit of taper, making a shallower neck for better feeding, and running at lower pressure -

seems like a jim dandy idea for a great DR rifle

might also neck it to 458, too !!

...but, wow. Lapua brass for a low pressure round like a Rigby? That brass would last forever.

yeah, can you imagine --- milsurp brass just laying around, going to the smelter, that could be used for a true DGR round? might would have to swag the primer pockets though

Hey Jeffe,

Just saw this thread ‘cause it’s been awhile since I’ve visited the AR forums…

Are you planning on staying with the same 2.650” case length as the .476/.490/.500 AR cartridges? If so why not just stay with the same 20º shoulder angle, base to shoulder length, and shoulder diameter? This would allow use of the same Go/No Go Gauges and any competent gunsmith ought to be able to resolve any feeding issues with the case shape. And this would be a useful alternative to existing factory cartridges.

Thanks,

Jim coffee

Jim,
I would just backwards inventing the 416 rigby, again ...

just funning

btw, the RUM based ones, 416, 458, and 470, all use the same headspace gage .. then the rigby based, 476, 490, and 500 accrel all use the same, but obviously different than above, gage

Back in '99 I asked a gunsmith about necking up the .338 Lop'wah Magnum to .416.
I was just funnin' too.
But I was crazy enough to do these:

The .308 through .458 have standard .338LM shoulder.
A ".475 Whelen Lop'wah" might be done that way by someone more adventurous than me.
Probably best to go with the blown-out shoulder diameter like on the .500 and .510.

I still like the "idea" of using the 338 LM case, standard or improved, for derivative cartridges...

Reminds me Ron, I still owe you a .423/.338 LM dummy cartridge. Weather has finally cooled down so I can work in the garage; I'll get on it in the mail to you soon...

Reminds me of a letter to one of the gun magazines several years back- the writer thought it would make a very good cartridge if a 25/20 was necked up to .30 cal. the gunwriter congratulated the letter writer on taking a giant step backward by his inventing the 32/20.

that would be the 476 Accrel -- and there's a 490 accrel awaiting me to barrel the rifle ... 49 caliber barrel and tooling and etc .. .,498x.490 groove and bore - a TRUE and first, 49 caliber

I am going another route now.
Use the 470 Capstick reamer inserted to desired length.
This gives it the 470 Capstick "ghost shoulder."
Then finish up with a .45-70 Govt. reamer for the base and rim.
Brass length of 1.6205" will make it a perfect match to the .45-70 base diameter (0.5055") above the usual rim,
thickness of 0.070" and rim diameter of 0.608".
Tapers from case mouth and ghost shoulder O.D. of 0.499": 0.0065" of taper over 1.5505" of case body above the rim,
and all of that taper is in the 1.05" below the ghost shoulder.

It is no mere .475 Linebaugh of only 1.4050" case length, with zero case body taper and reduced rim diameter. Eeker

My new wildcat is much more, more than 0.2" longer, full diameter rim, and some taper!
Not a .475 Linebaugh Long, nosirree!

I am going to call it the "470 Chapstick."
Should be great in single-shots and double rifles.

Then there is the 2-inch long version of similar,
I am calling that either the "470 Coupstick" or "475 Ghost Dance."
Might warrant a custom reamer ...

Anybody heard of anything like that before?
This is totally different from the 470 Turnbull and 475 Turnbull.

Well, those are officially my 23rd and 24th Wildcat designs, independent of anyone else's reduplication of genius or stupidity. hilbily
I haven't built them all, but I am working on it.
(I better take this highjack to another thread or two ... this forum and big bores, see if I gets any play ...)

Anyone who claims the .458 Winchester Magnum is ineffective has either not tried one, or is unwittingly commenting on their own sheepishness.
