Von GruffSome new Karelian Birch handle blocks arrived from the Ukraine this morning. I am quite partial to the gold flecks in the blue and green blocks and the red and black will have a variagated finish that will make a nice visual on the handle.
I have traded with a taxidermist friend in South Africa for these and he is just waiting on the cites paperwork before getting them away to me. Costly but my customer base loves giraffe bone with the previous lot I got being used in short order . Makes for a very nice handle either on its own or complemented with contrasting bolster

boom stickAre those giraffe femur? The giraffe femur is an amazing material for scales. I have seen pistol scales made from it first hand and it reminded me of ivory. Giraffe femur is incredibly strong I have been told.

about the densest bone there is. I have had four complete legbines before and it makes into beautiful scales. PJ is just waiting on the cites paperwork from the SA authorities so he can get them away to me.

Von GruffA set for a friend / worker in the inward goods section of a natural/organic store and the lever is often used for wood boxes where the nipple nose is used against the side of cardboard boxes to prevent over penetration against the product packaging inside. The knot hook is not sharpened as in a gut hook but is used to get into knots where produce is tied with rope/string. This set is dreived from my light rescue set.

Von GruffThe closed sheath is a new style I am offering on some of my models. Originated after conversation with Eurpoean hunter so this pair is off to him soon. One for the Safari knife with camel bone with black G10 liners over curve back buffalo horn bolster and the other to suit a PH EDC that he already has on hand

The simple flap over with face of sheath snap closure is a standard offering by some but this customer wanted the front edge closure for when he carries his rifle on the same side and didn;t want any chance of scuffing the high grade wood especially when the knife is carried right on the hip center rather than behind the hip

Yes making to order (just finished #755) am negotiating with SA taxidermist friend for giraffe bone but it is taking a while to get the cites paperwork. The camel bone I can get easily from the US.
Have shipped knives to 9 countries now although 90% have gone to the US.
My website is under my post.

Von GruffA skinner with camel bone over black G10 liners and curve back buffalo horn bolster on the 1084 blade. Honing steel in stamped sheath. Really liking the white bone over black liners for the contrast.

Von GruffI have just traded into these Moa bones. The Moa is an exticnt bird and these bones were confirmed to be 500 years old when they were taken to the museam after being found in 1984. Being bird bones they are hollow so I am going to stabilise them and then fill the hollow with black casting epoxy so hope to be able to offer them as handle material in due course. Legal to use/sell as not found on conservation ground but being rare the costs are up there. These are in very good condition so have not ever been in the damp or wet ground that is the main degradation factor. These are from two different types of the Moa with the longest bone at 20 inches long (overall) and the shorter one at 17 inches.

Von GruffI just had a pair of warthog tusks delivered to do a pair of knives for a customer. Checking to make sure there is enough in the curve to make the handle with a brass curve back bolster.
06 April 2022, 04:24
boom stickCan the ivory make for pins as well?
Love the idea. Would make a great pig skinner. Maybe left over could become bolsters for other knives?

Customer has asked for brass pins and yes there will be some left over and I am hoping it will be enough for one of the smaller handles.

I have always found warthog tusks to be frustratingly the wrong shape for knife handles as they have too much curve in them. I look forward to what you can do.

Couple of questions. What steel do you use on the Lion Knife and what is the length of the blade?
Second question, is could I get a quote on the Safari Knife and the Lion Knife, with either camel bone or giraffe bone and a closed sheath?
