There is nothing lacking from the Police Rescue knife and it looks great with a great sheath. Some things that I would want in the Police Rescue knife is S7 tool steel being one of the toughest steels out there (Jack hammer bit steel) A knife like this I would want to have the ability to puncture, pry and take hits from other tools to accomplish rescues from a twisted car or making an entry or self rescue. The butt is ideal for striking with a hammer. I would want a more blunt angle of the tip and to be at least 3/16ths thick stock. With this design, I could use it to hold the gap on a door while I breach it if needed and other breaching techniques.

appreciate the comments.
I have had 80CRV2 mentioned as the go to new steel for tough use situations so with the prototypes away for evaluation I am waiting one feedback from them but your comments are valuable and in particular the angel on the tip. I had some thought on a chisel tip and a 30 degree before going with what I did although in hindsight it may have better functionality with some alteration in that area.

Von GruffThe prototype light rescue set has 11/64 / 4.3mm 1075 nipple nosed knife with is 3 inch straight section blade (9 1/4 in OAL) for those situations where a point is not desired (seat belt or tight tie etc) The bare handle without scales is for compact carry while the radiused edges still give a good hold for comfortable use.
The flat head lever made from 1/4" / 6.3mm 5160 has the screwdriver tip on the 3 7/8 blade (8 inch OAL) that also doubles as a stout lever for the situations where this may be necessary. The gutted parra cord wrap gives enough bulk and very good grip for serious use of this handy accessory in the piggy back leather sheath, as it is more compact than a kydex one would be. Both tools are stone washed but may look into cerakote if the demand is there for it.

Here is some charpy test data points for comparison. 3V is a better all around tough steel but in an emergency situation, toughness trumps edge retention. 3V would be more popular than S7 though. I would be happy with either. You can go thicker on a less tough steel. 1/4” thick 3V tanto would be pretty indestructible.
If I were to decide the angle, it would be around 60 degrees. Not for everyone, but a true chisel grind sharpened just on one side has its advantages too (like prying) Perhaps you could offer a single or double sided grind depending on need.
12 September 2021, 12:38
Von GruffThe 30* I mentioned is the same as your 60* as I was measuring it the other way. I do have a couple of blanks that I may re-do like that for trial purposes.
13 September 2021, 03:26
boom stickto maintain rigidity for prying, the scale screw holes would need to be placed as to not adversely affect it under pressure and maybe limit any lightening holes.
13 September 2021, 06:54
boom stickI assume you have local FFs to try out the knife and give feedback as well as police? It would be good to make a turn out pocket organizer especially made for this set. here is an example.

The scale pin holes are no problem but may well leave out the front set.

Yes local police and FF here but have sent both prototypes to my US agent and he has his local police and FF evaluating them.

boom stickIf you want me to give feedback, I would be happy to especially if it is a blunt tanto version

Working through posibilities via email.

Von GruffFour more ready to go to Oregon in the US.
A Light HUnter with spalted maple burl over curve backed buffalo horn bolsters on the 1084 blade.
Three A H EDC's with Koa (Hawaii) Maple burl (USA) and Karelian Birch burl (Ukraine) on the cryo treated NitroV SS blades.
01 October 2021, 03:02
Use Enough GunNice!

12 October 2021, 00:06
Von GruffA few ready for epoxy and pins
17 October 2021, 08:27
Von GruffHave these all done now and ready for the heritage day here early november. The shop has another 10 or 12 that I will get back to have a decent display. Just the group pic for today as its been a long one getting all the sheaths sewn, hot waxed and the blades all sharpened so will get some individual pics and details later in the week
18 October 2021, 12:54
Von GruffFirst decent pic of the 8 inch carving set I took today and will get the rest tomorrow
As noted an 8 inch cryo treated NitroV SS carving set with Hickory Burl over brass bolsters
19 October 2021, 02:39
Von GruffA few pics of the completed knives. Just have to go over and do the final cleaning now of any finger prints and shed clart left after sharpening etc
First is a skinner and a Boning knife.
The Skinner has Resin Ivory scales over G10 CB bolsters on the 4 1/4 in 1084 blade and the Boner has Black Palm on the 6 1/4 in 1084 blade
The PH EDC has brown linen micarta over black linen CB bloster on the 4 3/4 in 1075 blade
The 4x4 Hunter has a very nice piece of Arizona desertwood over CB buffalo horn bolsters with black G10 liners on the 4 inch 1084 blade
19 October 2021, 02:52
Von GruffA fisherman and a Filliting knife
The Fisherman has blue infused acrylic over blue G10 liners on the 5 inch cryo treated NitroV SS blade and the Filliter has the same handle specs on the 6 3/4 in cryo treated NitroV SS blade
The Little Grayling has double dyed Lacewood between the brasse bolster and pommel with chocolate lanyard annd bead on the 4 1/4 in cryo treated NitroV SS blade
19 October 2021, 03:05
Von GruffTwo Pocket Rangers. One has Impala jigged buffalo horn c]scales over red G10 liners on the 5 in SS damascus blade and the other has Cherry Burl over CB buffalo horn bolsters on the 5 in 1095 carbon blade
and a Bird and Trout with rough jigged dyed bone scales on the 4 1/4 in cryo treated NitroV SS blade
I was dissapointed in the scales as theyhad a nice royal blue on each end but thay was only a surface dye and was ground off with the shaping so I will have to except the other 9 scale sets I have will be the same. Not a bad look in itself , just not what I had expected
19 October 2021, 03:14
Von GruffA little fruit knife for the kitchen with spilled milk acrylic on the 3 in cryo treated NitroV SS blade
This is another of the sheep shear blades with figured Eucalyptus handle and copper pins
And a roughy to finish with this piece of antler on the 5 in 1084 HC blade. Had the knife sitting for a while but was never happy with the bulk of the antler handle so gave it a severe re-shape and it feels much better in hand and it will serve for a hunter now. Will have to do some tidy up on it before the herritage day display.
01 November 2021, 09:36
Von GruffThree of these all ready to go to customers with two for the heritage display this weekend.
PH EDC with Yellow cedar burl over CB buffalo horn.
Heavy Hunter with Red Gum over CB buffalo horn with honing steel.
Wapiti Hunter with Koa over brass.
PH EDC with ebony over nickel silver.
Thumbrest Hunter with walnut over CB paper micarta
04 November 2021, 06:51
Von GruffTwo for today with a 8 1/2 inch rasp bowie blade with cherry burl over brass and black G10 spacers in edge dyed ten sheath.
Hunter Skinner with Tambotie over CB buffalo horn on the 1084 blade in left hand edge dyed tan sheath
23 November 2021, 09:09
Von GruffThis is as close to a matching pair of heavy hunters in walnut as I could get for a father son team so they are all ready to go now.
And a skinner with eucalyptus
15 December 2021, 06:31
Von GruffToday there is the new pattern 5 inch filleting knife with blue/black acrylic over blue liners on the NitroV blade with honing steel. A set of scollops added for wet hand use.
A Light Hunter with orange liners and bolster spacer under the OD canvas micarta handles on the 1084 blade. Customer asked for jimping so I bought a 15 LPI checkering file and that seemed to work well. A bit of shop clart to clean out of them to be cleaned out, but pleased with how they turned out.
15 December 2021, 06:38
Von GruffA few sheep shear knives all done. I take the grinds up as high as possible without interfering with the original markings
Macrocarpa and acacia
Eucalyptus and oak.
17 December 2021, 04:34
boom stickIt would be cool to see that cross pattern in black and red with the cross member the same width as the combined upright included the steel or add a white metal in the center of the cross member
17 December 2021, 09:18
Von GruffI did do one with heavier liners and bolster spacer but hadn't thought of the black and red but in the main I make to customers wants so dont do a whole lot of spec making just fior the sake of it.

Von GruffA friend on another forum asked --- do you make Viking knives and axes?
Loving a chalenge and making something new I found a design I really liked with a 10 1/4 inch blade and bought in a 30 layer bar of carbon damascus but decided to make one first from 1075 to prove the design before using the expensive damascus.
I ground it closer to finish than normal to hopefully show the hamon although grinding that thin can warp badly in the heat treat, but it is straight and ready for finish grind on blade and tang. A number of new things with this one so love the continuing chalenges this brings to the table.
After finish grinding, hand sanding and etching. I will try to make the hamon a bit more interesting next time with a bit more of a wave to it but happy with the way it turned out.

Von GruffThis pair of Light Hunters are away to Texas for a father and son. Flat back buffalo horn bolsters with Hickory Burl scales on the 1084 blades.
31 December 2021, 06:34
Von GruffFinished up the seax with copper and mystery wood. Added a bit of simple decoration with my 3 pin mark on the handle with both copper pins and black dots. (ok so I forgot to mark the blade so this was a reasonable work around.

Von GruffThe San mai blade (1084-15N20-1020) I re-ground down from a saber grind J T Ranger to a FF grind generic hunter to better show the san main line and it came out nicely as well. Spalted buckeye bolster with walnut scales.

boom stickAwesome that you are doing San Mai.
You sure seem to be having a lot of fun.
Magna Cut is the latest steel that seems to be having a lot of buzz in the cutlery world. It is supposed to have easy grinding capabilities with high toughness, high edge retention and excellent stain resistance. They are calling it the stainless M4 steel but it seems to be slightly superior with its fine grain structure.
https://knifesteelnerds.com/2021/03/25/cpm-magnacut/Dr Larrin also came up with Apex Ultra with a couple other lads which might be more up your alley designed for knife forgers.

That is an interesting steel development although the 20 minute hold at 2050f is a step up from anything I am using at the moment

Von GruffA couple finished this morning. A Bearded Chef with dyed giraffe bone on the NitroV SS blade. . Then there is the PH EDC with Koa over CB bronze bolsters on the 1075 blade. The PH EDC was designed for and in collaboration with an African PH and this is another one away to africa next week.
