10.75x57 mm
For all of those 400 Whelan fans, have you ever seen a 10.75x57mm offering. I just purchased a rifle so chambered. Seems this one would almost be a straight case. 423 caliber bullets. Am thinking a re-chamber to 10.75x68mm. ???

Here's mine. Rather pedestrian but I like it. I contemplated the 10,75x68 too but brass can be difficult to find at times.

There are likely to feeding issues that would need resolving as well.

I have enough .416's that I decided to leave it as is. Besides, 8x57 and even 9,3x57 brass is inexpensive and easy to find.

Here's a 9,3x57 case in the muzzle:

Got pics?

Wow Lb, just think, if you miss the target you can out run the bullet and catch it and reload it..

I think I would rechamber it to the first 9.3 wildcat on a .338 case, call it a 9.3 Chatfield Taylor/LB 404 esq. and then you would have a gun fitting for anything Africa has to offer!

Do you still have the 10.75x68 that I sold you, another one of those nightmares I have ever so often, its you shooting a Lion, buffalo or elephant with my rifle! BOOM

Yes I do. It has gone to Africa three times for buffalo. It has 5 bull kills with me. The last PH. was a young man, 26 years old. He really didn't like the idea of 350 gr. X bullets on buff--- until he saw the kills. He was amazed! I was thinking of rechambering this rifle to 10.75x68 and fitting a Lyman 35. A friend owes me a restock job so restock in old Tessier walnut and, voila, Ray bait!!! You know I bought all of the 10.75x68 Huntington had. I could feed tow or three more guns!

I remember you buying Huntingtons complete stock of 10.75x68s..I had to wait 90 days to get brass for mine!! pissers moon rotflmo

On the real side, I still think the 10.75x68 is the most overlooked caliber for DG out there...Very little recoil, 2350 FPS with 350 BX bullets and 2130 FPS with 400 gr. Woodleighs and that my friend equals the great 450-400 double rifle balistics..How can you beat that.

The 10.75x68 suffered bad press and bad bullets in its youth, and that is definately no longer a problem.

Ray, we're you working up loads for 10.75-68 a while back? When I worked up loads for the Hoffman, I used 380 gr. GS customs. Working slow and chronographing each round, I was able to get 2325 f/sec. No pressure signs and a slight compressed load. The Hoffman is light enough to really carry, and the recoil is closer to my 9.3x62. Noticeably less than any of my 404 Jeffery's. What do you think of rechambering and restocking this gun?

I was doing some load work as at the time I was building a 10.75x68 for one of my hunting clients..I also shot the GS Custom bullets in all my 10.75s and the .380 would get 2400 FPS in my 26" barrel and at about max, but I shot them at 2375 FPS as I recall....I used a long box so that I could seat bullets at .435 depth (one caliber deep)

I probably should make another one and I have been intertaining the idea of building a 10.75x338 Win or perhaps the 10.75x375 Ruger. Those would take care of the brass problems, but probably pick up some more recoil. However it appears that there is plenty of Hornaber brass now to be had....that and I may as well stick with my 404, but I have been known to get bored using the same caliber too much. I always liked that about the 10.75x68 plus by adding a drop box or extended box you could load it on Saturday night and not have to reload until the following Friday!

What I would really like to have is an original 425 WR rifle, but they have escalated in value over the years to the point I can't afford one to drag through the bush..I'm pretty hard on rifles anyway..

Bottom line is I would do it if I was you.

I understand the attraction of the 10.75x68 and 10.75x57.
Sort of like the "10.45x64mm Rimless" aka "400 Whelen."
I am thinking about getting a 3.6"-long box for one of mine too.
3.4" or 3.6", either one should work fine. tu2

Hi Leonard,

Good to see you posting again. That was a great social event shooting your Sterling Davenport 500 Jeffery in 107-degree Oklahoma heat: beer

My latest:

1. 400 Whelen above on a Winchester M70 Classic,
that you and Ray are inciting me to convert from 30-06 length to .375 H&H length, as I have threatened to do previously.
I have another that will stay 30-06 length, kurz enough for me. tu2

2. .408 Chey-Tac on an MRC M1999 PH action.
The "kurz" version of that will be on a CZ 550 Magnum. tu2

3. Getting an "RBL Professional" 20-bore double rifle to shoot round balls parallel to infinity. tu2

4. Getting a Ruger No. 1 made up into a 20-bore 3.5" rifled shotgun. tu2

5. I could go on but I won't. Too many projects, not enough money or time.

My turn to pay for the fine dining next time. beer

Look forward to another shoot out! Perhaps ewe could sponsor a big bore shoot in OKC. Great facilities. I can bring some of everything. Need three months to load enough ammo to entice others to test their metal.donations to our favorite cherity or the gun club or.........?

We have an across the course range out to 600 meters. How about an across the course shoot standing- sitting- prone for big bores. Then invite over the top .366-700 overkill group to shoot it out in OKC. The OU-Texas game used to be called the Red River Shoot-Out until politically correct folks made us rename it red river rivalry. Doesn't flow quite as sweet the new way. We'll call it The Heartland Bloodfest!!!
